Bagsy's Training Log

Thank you, it was quite special for me!

5/29
30 minute split run

I ran the first 20 before meeting with client and then came home. Glad I was able to beat the heat.

Short on time this morning. I feel a strong urge to program hop, want to focus on only one lift per day.

To which program would you :rabbit2:?

Not sure. Full body gets stale for me pretty quickly though.

Same, I like the idea of destroying a lift/body part then being done with my lifting.

Exactly! I don’t mind full body on the assistance work as much, especially because it can be easily supersetted with the main lift. But there is something always so appealing about going all-in on one barbell movement.

I find that it’s mentally hard to transition between different body parts or big movements.

Squat → squat variation is a lot easier for me than squat → deadlift variation or squat-> bench or press

I guess I’m program hopping.

I wanted twenty reps, but that wasn’t happening even though the reps felt and looked easy. Hit some wall. Still trying to get back in the swing of things, plus I haven’t pulled a high-rep AMRAP in a super long time. Wanted to do more assistance but unfortunately had to speed through this before a half-day of work that felt like an eternity.

This blog post appealed to me, so I think I will do this for several weeks. Do a PR set, maybe 5s PRO if I feel bad, then maybe do a few backoff sets before some assistance. Then call it a day.

I’m in a weird place because I feel more motivated to train after my break, and I’m mentally in a better place than I was a few months ago. Training is less of a coping mechanism on the side. Yet at the same time I don’t really know what I want right now.

I feel lean but at the same time not. I think I’m only a few pounds away from feeling okay about pushing the number on the scale up, especially as I feel I need to build more muscle. But I also don’t have the energy to run an intentional deficit right now to get there. I need to be mentally sharp for work. I have a looming deadline. Don’t think an “all-in” type of hypertrophy program fits my circumstances either. I don’t have room for training and diet to consume more of my life even if I have greater motivation for that to happen.

So, I guess I’m still coasting for now. I can’t help but feel like I am somehow wasting time. I have to be okay with it.

It’s a strange feeling, indeed. Glad I’m not the only one!

I think as long as you’re still being active and doing things that feel hard at times you’re not wasting time. You may not be optimizing the training but there’s improvements that stacks over time and reveal themselves when you push it appropriately.

Yeah, I like to think that’s the case. I think many things in life are seasonal anyway.

Jumps + 6x200m run at the track. Nearly all rounds < 40s. 1200m cooldown.

The last time I PR’ed with that weight overhead was probably five years ago, so that’s nice. Sixty pounds is a big mental and physical obstacle for me on the press. The running wiped me out in the heat.

My friend just adopted the most adorable puppy, so I might go visit him later. I am excited.

I feel this so much. I think seasons are also emphasized if lifting is not your only hobby. For me, fall/winter is when I love pushing things in the gym. But summer? Travel. All the travel. You aren’t coasting, you are prioritizing. No need to feel guilty, do what you need to not lose progress and focus on enjoying it.

Hell yes!

If you go see him, share some pictures. Dogs are the best!
