It is exactly jokes like that for which I earned my card.

It would be cool to meet up, so if your offer still stands, I can send you a message as the date approaches.

For sure! I’d love to do that, should you be somewhat close and the schedule allows for it

BBB C1W3D3

80 pullups

Press from the floor
35x5
52.5x5
60x5
65x4
52.5x5x10

Standing ab wheel 4x4
BB curl 52.5x2x10
100 band pull aparts
Dips 18,13,12

I always get stuck at 65 pounds, pressing it for only four or five reps on a good day. It’s been this way for years. Ugh. Somehow managed to finish all the BBB sets at least.

Where do you think you’re running out of steam on those heavy PR sets?

Not sure if this applies to you but my press(and bench) tend to respond well to higher frequency

Honestly, I can’t be as upset as usual about it because I’m running BBB, whose point is not to increase my top set strength so much.

I genuinely don’t believe I am strong enough to have specific “weakpoints,” but I lean toward front delts, i.e. simply need to get stronger. I can either press the weight, or I can’t. Triceps are rarely the limiting factor for me on any pressing movement.

I’ve tried higher frequency and higher intensity programs in the past without much success.

Ugh, I felt like a truck hit me this morning. It seems like the wave passed – no more chills – but my legs still feel like bricks after sleeping a lot and then lolling in bed in silence for a couple hours. I don’t think it’s COVID-related but rather a physical manifestation of stress. I realized that I haven’t taken a full rest day in a while, so I will take this as a sign and probably abstain from conditioning today. After all, I want to set deadlift PRs tomorrow more than I want to go running today.

This makes me think about the slightly distant future: I’m aiming to hang on long enough for another cycle of BBB after tomorrow, but I think I need to jump to a less mentally taxing program in a couple weeks. Even though I had a lengthy break between Deep Water and BBB, they’ve been a lot. I’m leaning toward a three-day 5/3/1 setup or a Dan John program.

Did i hear Mass Made Simple?

I will try it… one day! Probably this year.

Makes total sense, I never really think about the individual muscles myself. I find when I run out of steam it’s usually due to not being able to keep a solid starting position, losing the brace during the rep, or my lungs quitting on me.

that’s a lot of pull ups

How are you doing?

Hey, thanks for checking in. Because you asked:

I felt like death on Sunday. Another wave of chills knocked me out on Sunday afternoon. I spent a while sprawled on my bathroom floor, trying to avoid throwing up my one consumed meal yet at the same time wanting to do so to maybe feel less bad. Then I napped – twice – which is historic for me. I lost my appetite, so I ate almost nothing for the rest of that day. No way deadlifts were happening on Monday morning.

Although I will finish this cycle tomorrow, I decided to change direction and forgo another cycle of BBB. I still don’t have much of an appetite not only physically but also mentally. I feel burnt out and distressed, which do not pair well with shoveling loads of food down my throat. I finished nine weeks of hard training at least. I think I went all-in on Deep Water. That was a good stretch. I don’t have the mental or logistical space to do that again soon.

I’m going to start Dan John’s “One Lift a Day” program this weekend, which I think will help me take it easier on myself. I might stick with this until May when I leave town a couple times.

Oh, I did some hill sprints yesterday. I might try to do these twice per week now that the weather is nice.

Still hitting those PRs

Between work, intense training, and surgery, your body may have hit its limit. I’m glad you’re feeling better (so it appears) than over the weekend.

I love the idea of Dan John’s OLAD. Forcing myself to only do one or two lifts has proven difficult, but the mental relief from only facing a single movement is a huge relief. In fact, I might reconsider doing that for a month or two.

Which lifts will you do?

Thanks for the words. Honestly, the surgery was probably the easiest one I’ve ever had, even if it was a little annoying to not lift for a bit. Unless you count nose cauterization as surgery, hahaha. But the other things, as well as the state of the world, add up.

I hate most programs that have upper and lower body barbell movements on the same day, so I usually abandon those. Focusing on one barbell movement seems to work best for me. Still, I like assistance work, so it will be challenging for me to not add it. But like you said, I think it will be a mental relief. Dan said in a video that adding loaded carries after each lift would be acceptable, if you want to try it and feel the urge to add something else.

I’ll do pullups, SSB squats, push presses, deadlifts, and presses.
