Bagsy's Training Log

Tlgains is very supportive of this decision and is happy that Bagsy is back to doing what Bagsy does best.

(Lol I like typing in third person I like to think I sound cool)

Thank you!

Yeah, I’m not sure. Have been dead-set on academia for a long time and now I’m not so sure. It’s probably normal to feel like this right now though. Sometimes I question why I’m even doing this because I don’t like being pigeonholed.

Glad to read! I’m not very good at lifting weights, but it sure as hell makes my life a lot better.

You’re right on track, haha!

Squats felt heavier than I would have liked, but I expected that. I’m going to be optimistic and attribute that more to not squatting with a bar on my back for three weeks. The warmup sets felt super weird, especially at the bottom of each rep. I decided to wear my belt for the main sets, which to my surprise felt better than without. Gonna feel this tomorrow.

Why is that surprising?

I thought the belt would dig into the incisions

Makes sense. Didn’t realize it would potentially impact that, seems like (continued) great news though!

A volume phase first probably makes sense, so in that way it is a good idea.

Yeah, I’m glad that’s not the case. Boosts my hopes that I’ll be able to pick up where I left off after the next week or so.

Haha, true. Plus I feel like I’m in a decent enough place with respect to body comp, so I’m not opposed to gaining weight again for another six weeks.

How’re you doing? You haven’t posted in a couple days - not since your first squatting session after surgery - so just checking to make sure everything is ok.

Hey, thank you for the concern! I was at a show this week, which can wreck my sleep, training, and work schedule a bit. I am fully intact

2 mile run 14:45

Was low on time this morning, planning to deadlift tomorrow. The push presses felt more solid than expected, and the run went well. I managed a sub-7:00 first mile without really trying, only deciding to go for it in the last 200m or so. I’m kind of curious about how much I weigh right now but not curious enough to check.

Really good! 200 was heavy but more doable than expected. Also cool to do ab work again. Squats have been the weirdest lift so far. So far push presses have gifted me the most DOMS.

70x9x5 push presses from the floor in thirty minutes
50 band pull aparts

Decided to try this thirty-minute pressing challenge thing, which turned out to be difficult sets of five every few minutes. This felt bad not only physically – yesterday’s deadlifts destroyed my entire back, I was tired and hungry from said deadlifts, I started feeling my incisions about halfway through this – but also especially mentally – why is this weight still so heavy for me? Whatever, it is what it is. So, angst fueled the whole thing. Realistically, I’m probably being hard on myself given the circumstances, and I at least had a few decent days this past week.

It’s a nice day here, but I’m skipping conditioning because I don’t feel like doing it. At least not in this moment. I really should pick up the sandbag again though. Maybe my writing this will compel me to do that later today, maybe not.

Also going dairy-free again.

It certainly seems that way.

If you took 3 weeks off with no surgery I’d still say that, keep building back up.

70 pullups
SSB squat 130x2x7, 110x10
2x3 standing ab wheel
3 mile run 23:32

Oh my, I’m such a doof. I have been wondering why squats have felt relatively worse compared to other lifts this past week. I’m not a good squatter. Still, I couldn’t understand why the difference was so noticeable: I may have lost some water weight and skill, but I definitely was not starving myself or taking months off.

Figured it out today. Maybe my doctor also removed part of my brain because it turns out that I couldn’t add weights in my mind. I didn’t forget that my SSB is heavier than my other barbell, but for some reason I added the weights in my head as if I was using the latter.

So, I’m actually stoked that I managed reps with 130 on the SSB after still feeling like deadlifts ran me over and coming back to this after a few weeks away. My core also didn’t feel weird after this, which is a win. I think I used 125 last time instead of the weight I logged.

Edit: Also got ten reps on my first set of pullups, nice.

I think I should stop fooling around and get back on a program this weekend. Of course DW still simmers in my mind, but I am also thinking about doing BBB.

I want this year to be one in which I push my overhead strength more than anything, so I am thinking of ditching bench entirely. With BBB I could have one strict press day and one push press day. BBB would let me still hammer volume but also touch slightly heavier weights. It would also save me some time, as I have a lot of work on my plate these next couple months.

However, I can’t deny that DW seemed to work well for me though. I also think having one lower body day was good. I’m pleased with my body comp after this program. It’s like Stockholm syndrome!

Planning to debate this over the next few days.

Bagsy, I have been following your log for a bit but haven’t said hello yet. Figured I should start using my words.

Yes please. I am always astounded at the weight you can move. Watching you crank reps out on weights that make me tired watching is the best. I outweigh you by ~30 pounds and I never dreamed I could see that strength if I lost that much weight, you have clearly shown what can be done with hard work and consistancy. I am glad your recovery is going well, but I am also looking forward to see the damage you can do with BBB. I have no doubt your press number will go up.

I figured you would like that idea lol

Wow, I am flattered. Thank you so much for the kind words! I remember seeing your update on last year’s T-ransformation. I was glad to see you recently start a training log. I will definitely be following along. I am also interested in learning more about your biking pursuits in addition to the lifting. You are definitely putting in the work as well. I think you, @omats, and I will get along well!
