Who here back squats in Olympic lifting shoes? I just bought some do-win shoes and for front squatting they are excellent. I used them yesterday for my back squat, and they felt… ok, kinda weird.
I was having trouble getting my hips back because it was almost too easy to sink into the hole, and it seemed like I was ending up in the hole with much less posterior chain tension than usual, making getting out of it alot harder. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
And I usually lift in cross trainers or running shoes and can get ass 2 grass with not problem. It could just take some getting used to…
Yes, it will be hard to get your hips back because the shoes will push you forward. The point of the shoes are for ease of getting deep in the squat, not for using the posterior chain. If you want to do deep, quad heavy squats use the shoes, otherwise find some flat soled shoes.

Yeah… why would you want to use your quads while you were squatting anyway???
There’s probably going t obe some form change when you first get into them. If you PC is strong and used to wide stance squatting then chances are it’s not the weak link and you should embrace the opportunity to train your quads up and improve your squat overall.
Gotcha. Thanks for the input. Hanley a co-worker of mine tells me the adidas shoes have a really low heel as far as oly shoes go, and Ive heard the do-win shoes i have are one the higher heeled brands. Anyway, I kinda figured that was the deal but wanted to hear from people who used shoes. Hanley, you train for powerlifting in the adidas? I want to work on a good olympic back squat which I guess is more quad dominant than I previously thought. Interesting. I had been doing shoulder width squats getting nice and deep, I guess I figured it was pretty similar to a nice oly back squat. I think your right Hanley it is a matter of getting used to the shoes…
I use the Adidas Ironwork II for back squats in powerlifting. They have worked great for me since I squat with a narrow stance. It helps me sink down in the hole better. The heel support is what makes all the difference. I have used Chuck Taylor’s and Safe squat shoes in the past and the Adidas are far better for me.
