And also–there’s no such thing as a mini-subwoofer. That’s like a forty-five pound five-pound plate.

I honestly never noticed much of a difference between lossy and lossless, myself. other guys will disagree, but I’ve seen double-blind tests with much higher-end gear than what you have that suggested the difference is extremely subtle, at best. I encode ALAC myself, or did, back when I still had my portable rig. FLAC is too much a pain in the ass to be worth it, and I don’t think there’s any difference, anyway.

What cans you should get depends on what you want (in-ear, open, closed) price range, if you want to shell out for an amp, etc.

And Live, etymotics are a bit bass shy, but they make up for it in every other way. I used to be a basshead myself, until I got used to higher fidelity sound that doesn’t rely on pure flabby bass boom to sound like music. You’re not going to find big bass sound in an earphone, sadly. IEMs, like Etys, will give you pretty good bass once you get a good seal, but it’s still not going to match what you’re used to. If you don’t mind a classic over-the-head style, Senn PX-100 or Koss Portapro would be better choices for bass in your price range. If you want full-size cans, and want to spend more, then you can start to think about real bassy headphones.
yeah i know what you mean. my friend has a pair of like 30 dollar Sony headphones and the bass is rediculous on it, really good sound too. id love to just buy a pair but i know im going to be using them at the gym often and i dont want to look like a goofball wearing oversized headphones at the gym. plus its just more convienet for other reasons to have earbuds or something.

^ what do you think of these?

btw, Amazon has everything for like 60% less so looks like my options just got a whole lot bigger. so i may buy a pair for just commuting around and stuff and an additional pair for the gym.

The V-Moda stuff looks cool but doesn’t sound that great, especially their budget earbud, form what I’ve heard. Supposedly it has pretty big bass, which you’ll probably like, but not much else.

i think ill grab those for the gym and maybe get the EH350’s for when i want a better sound…unless you can reccomend something slighty better? its really rediculous how much cheaper amazon is for everything.

As mentioned, Senn px-100 or Koss portapro. Both can be had at amazaon for cheaper than the eh350, and they’ll sound better.

The portapros have a lifetime warranty, which is also cool.

Thanks for answering
Hmm maybe it’s just placebo, but I feel like I can pick out individual instruments and notes better with FLAC and ALAC.

only think i dont like about the portapros is they have that mesh stuff covering the earphones versus leather cans, same thing with the px-100 wouldnt those be lesser quality than DJ earphones because of that?

I’d like to stick with in-ear. Sounds like IEM is the better choice for sound reproduction anyways. I don’t know much about amps, but I’m of the ‘less is more’ camp - I just guess it depends on how great the enhancement is with one as to whether I forgo a bit of portability to satisfy my inner audiophile…

My budget would probably be around $200 max, and bass isn’t my priority. I’m quite old skool with my music, mainly light rock and acoustic stuff but with some jazz and classical for revising: so was thinking Ety ER6i’s [£60] with a FiiO amp? But like I said, I’m clueless…

-Rowesk
Skip the Ety 6i and go straight to the ER-4P, or S of you want an amp. if you like, you can get the 4P now and get an amp and the P/S converter later (it can be had pretty cheaply). Amps move forward pretty quickly, and I’ve been out of the game for a year or two, so you might want to ask around or read on Head-fi.org a bit. I used to like Norm’s Go-Vibes, and they couldn’t be beat at that price range (right in yours), but I just read around and it seems he stopped making them. I’m actually really disappointed; he was a really nice guy and made great shit. Of course, you can’t go wrong with a well-built cmoy and a cheap line-out dock(a must). You could get everything for pretty close to $200 if you shop around.

I had the Ety 4p with the S converter myself, and I loved them. Ran it with a Go-Vibe 6 and an ALO Cryo. It was a great rig. The 4P would be great for your preferred tunes.

An amp won’t cut down on portability at all. A good Cmoy will fit in an altoids tin. Use a rubber band/velcro it onto your iPod and you’re set.

No. They’ll seal out less outside noise, but they’ll sound much better. If you plan to use them in a quiet environment(home use) then they’re your best bet. I wouldn’t try it at the gym, however. You’re not going to find decent ‘dj’ style headphones without spending at least a hundred bucks.

they sell @ retail for over $100 (the EH300’s). the thing is Amazon is the great equalizer because theyre new on there for like $60, i tried looking at REALLY nice ones but they were still all $300+ i guess some things are just always expensive.

A hundred bucks for used gear, I mean.

I’m going to add a request in here as well -wireless headphones for the hubby to use while playing video games. Suggestions?
I would advise against skimping on wireless headphones…unless your husband likes a lot of static and hissing with his sound.

A few years ago, I got a $70 Sony wireless headset and the quality was just suckaaaaay…it was also only RF…and RF is suckaaaay.

You could look at Denon, but honestly in terms of sound quality, the best I’ve ever heard (for leisure listening, not studio work) are V-Moda Vibes. They’re just notoriously non-durable. They run about $90-105, though.

At the middle theres a combo of a headphone pair that u linked, + these headphones, + a 2gb usb drive. Might wanna try that out. Total price is about $50 in the combo.

Just bought some Alessandro MS-1’s and Ety ER-6i’s from head-fi - both used, but barely [MS1’s were just a few days old].
Fell neatly within my £100 budget too [£91 in total :D]!

Thanks Vic, for the advice! I couldn’t have asked for better budget headphones.
Though I’m happy with the MS1’s, they’re not as good as I was expecting. I imagined a massive leap over non-“audiophile” phones and a relatively unknown brand with all the good praise behind them…
I guess where they surpass my previous headphones in a massive way, is in the minutia - i can much better make out instruments. It’s hard to explain, but before upgrading i just heard the track, as an entity, as a whole. Each millisecond was but one note. Now, it feels like my head is a stage with the singer and instrumentalists making noise from different distinct locations. It’s fucking awesome.

Overall, I’m very happy with my purchase, and again, thank you vic!
If you’re thinking about upgrading your headphones or audio equipment, do it. No questions.
-Rowesk
The ms-1s won’t be driven properly without an amp, of course. When it comes to new gear, even the biggest improvements won’t really slap you in the face. it’s the same music, after all.

But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth it.

I’ve got a FiiO E5, but have yet to use it yet… Thoughts on that?
I’ll give it a try now!
-Rowesk

I just bought a new pair of headphones a few days back.

Sony MDR-NC6
noice cancelling.

Theyre pretty sick.
