A New Pair of Headphones

Im looking to buy a new pair of headphones for my I-pod. Anyone have any suggestions for a pair that blocks outside noise out very well. i dont want to ruin my hearing by having to turn my volume up all the way whenever theres even the slightest external noise.

Thanks in advance.

Tom

I hear great things about Skullcandy. A little too expensive for me though.

what do you normally use your ipod for…in the gym? running the roads? or just generall walking about listening to music?

for running/gym work id go for these… my mum using them and is a big fan http://www.currys.co.uk/product.php?sku=824877&camp_id=froogle

for just walking about etc… id get a decent pair of inears… i dont like to be all flashy with a big while advert around my head (skull crushers) :stuck_out_tongue: something like these wouls do it

What is your price range?

What style do you like? (Do you like the over the head, in the ears, around the back of the neck…etc)

What will you be using it for? (I have 2 sets of headphones, one for in the gym/running…etc and one set for traveling…anything else)

I usually buy the crappy cheap ones because I know they’re just gonna end up breaking anyway (I’ve been through a few of the more expensive pairs). I’d kill for a small coreless pair though. The damn wire makes me crazy at the gym.

I have Shure e4c’s. Excellent sound and noise isolation, but not a good workout choice if you sweat a lot.

I use these

They have great sound quality and fold almost completely flat. I only wear them when training, and as much as I sweat, they still last about a year or more. I have a few stored just so I don’t run out.

I’ve tried a few different types, Shure, Sony, Bose, but I currently use Sennheiser CX300 earphones.

They’re relatively cheap and they sound good, plus, I find that iPods etc. aren’t powerful enough to drive most headphones properly due to the increased resistance.

I dont really want to spend more than 40-50 dollars, give or take a few.

I prefer headphones similar to the standard I-Pod headphones- little “spuds” that go into the ear. I need more noise-blockage though. i hate having to turn my ipod all the way up because i know its bad for my hearing.

I use my ipod mainly for lifting and during car rides and the like.

thanks for the replies thus far. Please keep posting suggestions.

My inner headphone geek suggests you get a portable amp.

For the record, the reason IEMs or canalphones sound louder is because they create a vacuum in your ear canal, focusing the sound, essentially making it louder. Turning up your iPod has the same effect.

Audio-technica ATH-ANC7.

As good as the Bose Quiet Comfort 3, but half the price. I love mine. They block out everything except really low frequency noise (base).

Try Shure E2c-n sound isolating earphones:

I have the slightly more expensive E3c-n and they supposedly block 85% of outside noise.

Yeah, you want an in ear model.

The ones that came with my sony walkman are great. I think you can buy a pair for around $60.

Someone mentioned skullcandy but I must say that I don’t like them nearly as much as my sonys (my girl has a pair). The sound quality doesn’t compare.

I have a pair of in-ear Skullcandys. They were like $15. at Target. They sell the around-ear ones too for the same price, but I don’t want to work out in those.

They actually save battery life because I don’t need to turn the sound up as loud as I do with the stock ones since they block out sound so well.

@ whoever said the wire annoys them at the gym:
I just stick it under my shirt - works well

@Artem: Got the same ones, suck ass. I got some with my cellphone, they ROCKED. I dont have those things at the end (dunno what theyre called) so i cant use them anymore, but i still have them.

Skullcandies (have em) suck. Sound quality wise and bass wise.

Wireless headphones, I dont have em but i like them.

I know you said you don’t want to spend a decent amount of money on the headphones; I might have agreed with you in the past. I’ve been through so many fucking headphones it’s ridiculous. I’ve tried them all. I finally realized that the wires are what gets fucked up, so I bit the bullet and bought a bluetooth headset and adapter for my Ipod. Needless to say, it’s fucking awesome.

They legitimately work from across the gym, and no wires. Hopefully this setup should last a while, but I got them with a warranty from Best Buy, so if the break I can get a new pair for the next two years. The headphones were Insignia brand, and cost about $50, and the bluetooth adapter for the Ipod was $60 or $70. Exepensive, but well worth it.
