THat was all out effort tho right??

The problem that I see with many people doing chins is that they go all out every week on them.

Would you go all out with max poundage on a bench press or squat and then wonder why it isn’t increasing???

Yah that was pretty much all out, but It was my testing week (in my program). I think your right though, I go all out too often. I go to almot failure everytime I do bench press, and that’s the the exercise where I have had the lease progress.

Would it sound about right to go 1 rep short of failure on the last rep of the last set for each exercise?

Yes, you shouldn’t be training to failure on every exercise all the time. How frequently are you training anyway?

You can look at my log if you want, but my set up is like this:

W1: 4 days
W2: 4 days
W3: 4 days
W4: 4 days
W5: 2 days

W1: practise new movements, figure out 3RM on main exercise

W2: 8x3 on main exercise

W3: 4x5 on main exercise

W4: 3x8 on main exercise

W5: re-test 3RM on main lifts, no accessory lifts

why don’t you just use the 8x3 workout(s) to test your 3RM? I think it’s a waste to designate a workout just for testing.

Because it’s also a deload week. + I do spend some extra time for more volume after or before testing.
