Atlas Shrugged; I Pressed

Thanks Dave. I feel better now that I have decided to just concentrate on MP. It gives me a focus. The bench will necessarily rise with it, to a degree. Once I get back to a respectable weight, I will shift back to doing bench and MP evenly…maybe.

Lexie is hanging in there. It isn’t easy, though. The closer we get to school starting, the wiggier she gets. You can see the stress. Poor girl…
Hopefully she can burn some of it up in the gym.

Strick, the gym is an excellent place to burn “nervous” energy and beat down anxiety…its one of the reasons I go…hopefully you can continue to share that with your daughter

I am trying to scale back with her just a bit, until she gets settled in school. I told her that, today, she can do whatever she wants…do her 5x5…go for a new max…do reps…whatever. I just want her to make sure that she feels worked, when we are done.

On an aside…My youngest (9) got himself grounded from electronics for the rest of the summer (2 weeks), for saying something inappropriate to a couple of little girls. I wanted to demolish him. His Mom opted for the grounding.

She has backed off of the grounding a bit, deciding to allow him to “earn” a little bit of time each day. I got to set the terms, though.

He has to do…

30 sit-ups
6 real (good) push-ups - which is hard for him. He has to do them one at a time.

  • Instead of real push-ups, he can do 30 cheater push-ups…knees up on something
30 OH DB presses with 10# DBs. He got them in 2 sets today. Probably going to 15#
    10 laps around the yard…running
10 minutes of riding his bicycle

The push-up requirement will eventually go to 10 (50 cheater). And, as I said, the DBs to 15#.

Any bicycle riding or running while outside playing does not count towards this.

Successfully completing an exercise earns him screen (computer) time. Doing them all gets him the max he can have for the day. He is doing them without complaint.

So, we finally figured out how to get him to exercise and forget that he doesn’t want to try because he might fail.

Nice work inspiring your young one to exercise, that screen time can provide great leverage(it does with my five year old).

It is an incredible motivation…sadly enough. But, whatever works. And I have made sure to compliment him and tell him how proud I am of it. That always seems to spike it even higher.

In fact, when I got home from the gym, and told him how proud I was, he had to show me his push-up. It was almost perfect…95%.
Wife told me that he did his 6 push-ups, today, straight. 1,2 and 6 were pretty good she said. 3, 4 and 5 were a little lazier.

When he can hit 10 good ones, straight, I’ll have to do something for him.

Heck, even my wife, Jennifer, decided to get down on the floor and show him a push-up. You know, play on his ego. She did three good ones and had more in her. I was impressed, since she never lifts anymore.

Military Day #1 - Reps
The day formerly known as Bench Day

I decided to go ahead and try for the reps at 195#, today. I really want to get to 205x10x3 before switching to DBs. I suspect that might be a wait.

Lexie wanted ice cream, after the workout. I told her if she hit some sort of PR (max, new 5x5 weight or reps), and I got my 195x10x3, she could have ice cream. That just turned her into a cheerleader for Batma…Daddy.

Military Press
barx20
95x10
135x10
165x5
195x10x3

Ladies and Gents, I got them. It took every last ounce of oomph, will and defiance to do it. But I got them. The last rep on set two and the last two reps on set three were, literally, force of will. They should have never gone. Now…205#…

CGB - hands just inside the rings
225x8x3

Blasted my triceps.

Face Pulls - alternating palm inside and palm outside grips
175x10x4

Seated Row Machine Thangy
170x10x2

Lexie’s workout

Bench
45x10
65x5
85x5x5 - 5x5 PR - These were easier than the 80x5x5 a couple of weeks back. She could have gotten 8 reps, at least, on the first 2 sets.

Military Press - she was out of gas
65x3
55x3
barx5x2

Face Pulls
45x10
60x10
55x10x2

Seated Row Machine
70x10x2

That was it. A good first day on with the new plan.
Lexie impressed and was lauded.
Ice Cream was had…by her. I’m still watching what I eat.

Oh…and I got to point out to Lexie. There was a boy in the gym, with his mother. He looked about 14. Couldn’t have been younger due to gym rules. He was struggling for 3-4 reps with 55#, on bench. I felt sorry for him, because his form was awful and she didn’t seem to know what to tell him.
I did point out to Lexie, though, that a 14 y.o. boy was getting 3 or 4 reps with 55#, and she just did a 5x5 with 85#. I got an evil grin out of her.

For the Win !! love reading the workout recaps…

Yeah…it’s times like that I know that there is a little bit of competitive spirit in her.

Official weigh-in…down 39.4#.

Weight-loss has definitely slowed. Hopefully it is because I am trading muscle for fat.
My head does seem lighter…

Quick update. I am about to head out the door to do a bags tournament, with my brother…

Military Press - Heavy (for me)
barx20 - 10 front and 10 back
95x10
135x10
165x3
195x3
225x3
235x3
245x3 - PR since returning - Hit my chin on the way up on my 3rd rep. Not grazed it. Hit it square on the bottom.
255x1

BB Shrugs
315x5
405x10 - 1 sec pause on each rep
405x10 - 3 sec pause on last 3 reps

Rear Delt Raises
40x12x3
25x12 - slow

Laterals
Drop Set
45x6
35x6
25x6
then
25x10

Rear Delt Machine
100x10x2

Off to toss some bags!

Edit: Guess I should add that Lexie’s back was bothering her. So, she chose to hit the pool with her brother rather than lift.

Bags did not end well. Oh well

Big “I don’t wanna” workout. But, it got done…

Seated Cable Rows
200x13
280x10x3 - narrow grip
280x10x3 - shoulder width grip

Assisted Pull-up Machine - with every pound of assistance I could stack on it
wide grip x 6
narrow grip x 6
medium grip x 6

Lat Pulls - narrow neutral grip
150x8x3

Kroc Rows
120x20

Seated Row Machine
185x8x2

Another strong MP session. I had a few of those I don’t wanna sessions this week.

What in tarnation is a BAGS tournament?

Dave, there have been too many of those lately. Fortunately, tonight was better.

Military Press Rep Day

Well, I sabotaged myself…again. I knew that the 205# was going to be brutal. So, I decided to try the workout fuel again, just at a lower concentration and at a slower pace. It floored me again. After my 1st set of MP, at weight, my legs were shaky and I felt like my blood sugar was wonky.
I do believe that the stuff works, for some people, just not me. If anyone wants it, give me a yell. I will send it to you. Obviously, it has been opened. About 3 servings have been used…flavoring is berry.

Oh, Lexie bowed out again today. She is so nervous about school starting that she is almost non-functional. Hopefully I can get her back in there this weekend.

Military Press
barx20 - 10 front and 10 back
95x10
135x10
175x3
205x10x3 - Full disclosure…

The first set I blasted. It was good for at least 13 reps. But this is where the shakiness in my legs started and I started feeling off.
The second set was good for at least one more rep…maybe two.
The third set, I was gassed. Everything was slower. I powered through the 8th rep. The 9th rep was a grinder and an obvious place to stop. With one rep from goal, though, I had to try. I dropped the bar deep and exploded with what little bit I had left. Momentum and the little remaining push I had carried me to 3/4 of lockout. It stopped. I had zero gas, was shaking, went up on my toes, squirmed, wiggled, and it just wouldn’t go. I am convinced that it would have gone, had I stayed away from the workout fuel. So I am counting 29.75 reps as 30.

After that, I was pissed. I waited about 90 seconds, unracked the weight again, and couldn’t do a single rep. I was completely wasted…spent…left it all on the field…all in the ring…etc…

Face Pulls - Alternating palms inside and out
170x15x2
170x10x3

I crashed on this as well, after the 1st set. Fortunately, it was a little lighter weight than normal.

Bench
135x10x2

Wanted to do sets of 225#. I am not sure I had enough to do e rep a single rep at that, though.

Despite the seeming collapse during the workout. I am thrilled with the reps at 205!
If I had 13 or more reps in me that first set, there is no reason that I can’t push 225# for 8 to 10 reps. So, we are getting closer to where I was…just not there yet.

what the hell is in that workout fuel! Crack? despite the fuel hiccup, progress is being made Big Man. Well done.

MP for 3x10 at 205 is supposed to gas you. Well at least the few of you who are capable of doing it. Nice work.

I’m not sure what it is. But I can definitely see how it would jack some folks. Apparently, not only do I have a petite frame, but I have a pansy system to go along with it.

Gassed was an understatement. I can’t remember the last time I was that wiped out.
I am still feeling it…and I have heavy MP tomorrow. I am going to bed early to try to recover as much as I can before tomorrow morning.

To make things worse, my nephew has his 1st football game tomorrow…7th grade. It is at 11:30 and about 40 minutes away from my house. So, I am going to have to lift early. My body hates lifting early.

That MP of yours is amazing. That is one lift I cannot do since my shoulder repair. Just have no oomph or consistency with anything overhead. So I find other people’s accomplishments in that area particularly impressive. Glad to see that Lexie is still training. My daughter started high school this past Monday. There was a lot of stress and worry on her part, so I can relate to what you are dealing with regarding Lexie and school.
