Atkins Advantage Shakes

So I normally view any “Atkins” product as completely junk, but I happened to read the label on an Atkins shake today, and it seemed actually better than most RTDS out there. Just 2g. net carbs…a bit high on fat, but all the protein is casein or whey. Are they decent to consume?

The following is fron an interview I did with a “protein insider” (someone who works in the protien manufacturing business).

It’s not about Atkins, but about RTD’s in general:

T: What’s the deal with the ready-to-drink protein drinks? High quality or low? Are they any better than Slimfast?

PI: They’re slightly better than Slimfast.

T: Why are they bad?

PI: You have to literally cook them. The FDA requires that you pasteurize ready-to-drink products, and you end up just destroying these glycomacropeptides â?? they’re gone. What you end up drinking is just a basic, bare minimum protein supplement, a very expensive one at that.

Because these products use so much water, and consequently weigh a lot, the shipping costs end up being considerable. That’s primarily why they cost so much. You’re paying dearly to have someone shake your shake for you. And, unfortunately, the technology that exists today has not improved since they first started doing RTDs [ready to drinks] and so you get a basic protein supplement, nothing exotic, nothing interesting, and usually rotten tasting.

TC said it, and I have to agree. I got some Muscle Milk RTDs cheap from a Longs Drugs that was closing near my house (everything was 50-75% off) and I’ll never drink that crap again. Smooth going down, but after about a half hour, I swear I had just drank a glass of spoiled milk. Burping up that stuff was nasty.

So any ballpark on when those Biotest RTDs will hit the shelves?
