At What Point Do You Think You Are "Qualified" to Give Out Advice?

Their goal could very well be to be physically present in the gym for a certain amount of time.

Advice can’t exist in a vacuum. Advice is goal dependent.

True but whats the poin of going to the gym if your just going to do nothing. Or sit at the lat pulldown machine for ten minutes on your phone doing the occasional rep especially when others need to use it. The lat pulldown machine is also the low row machine so when it came time in my workout to do some low rows i find someone hogging the machine whilst doing nothing being on there phone! How pathetic

I believe we are having 2 different conversations. I am not talking about under what circumstances this phenomenon occurs; I am providing an example of this phenomenon when taken to the extreme.

That said, I have witnessed this in person with the Mrs outsquatting some dudes at the gym.

Life is absurd. Read some Camus.

Edit: Also, ask to work in. Gym etiquette is dead and replaced with passive aggressiveness.

Some humans thought processes will continue to amaze me to the very day I die.

R.I.P gym etiquette

It’s been dead for quite some time where I train unfortunately.

Also dont you just hate ego lifters? One of the regular" everyday is arm day " dudes was doing there usual curls at the gym, when they were done they picked up there gym bag about to leave but then two chicks walked in and they ditched the bag and went back to the dumbells , picked up weights they shouldnt be curling and proceeded to do a bunch of cheat reps, haha what a douchebag.:joy:

Not really.

Why are you so concerned with what everyone else is doing? I tend to be too focused on my own training to notice those around me when I lift at a commercial gym.

I guess i kind of just have a standard for what people should be doing in the gym and not be idiots. it just makes me mad . unfortunately the world is like this and i have to learn to deal with it

I feel this thread has gone in the wrong direction.
If someone asked for advice on say Programming, at what point do you think someone is qualified to give advice.

Sorry i kinda hijacked the thread lol!

I say when someone is unafraid to use their own success as justification for their advice, they are either qualified or delusional. Thankfully, the audience can typically tell the 2 apart.

So only anecdotal advice about themselves. That’s a good answer.
So I could recommend someone to do a 5/3/1 variation based off of my own success with it. That would be OK.

Assuming someone asked and you were willing to share your results to let them judge, that seems like a fair exchange of info.

Since this thread is already a bit off the rails. On the other hand do you think it’s acceptable to ask for advice from random people at the gym?

For example, one time I was deadlifting next to a guy squatting who I’ve seen pull 4 plates fairly easily which is a big thing for my gym. During his rest periods, which are usually quite long, if I went ‘hey would you mind watching this set and telling me what you think?’
What’s people’s opinion on this and how would you react if you were asked?

Most people will enjoy being asked for advice. I’d say it’s ok to ask as long as the fellow isn’t about to start/is in the middle of his set.

Yeah, many people love helping you out, and talking about their training. Look how many people type around, or put up videos on the internet.

Asking strong dudes questions is also a good way to get “in” with the gang. When you’re “in” it’s like you have a team to train with.

Do it. Even better, get to know big and strong guys and find out what their schedules are like and see if you can work your way into training with them. If what they are doing conflicts with what you read on the internet, just go along with it. People were already getting big before the internet and long before Rippetoe descended from the heavens and appeared on Mount Sinai drunk on single malt whiskey bearing the 10 Low Bar Squat Commandments.

There’s always a possibility that you may look like an idiot to someone who is far more accomplished than you. Think about it.
