But I’ve been told cince I have asthma they would not pass me?
Is this true?
Its my understanding if you have asthma no branch will take you.

I hear this all the time but I’ve known lots of Marines with asthma. Perhaps they developed it before a 25 mile hump laugh.
But I think it’s dependent upon the individual. So basically, asthma=yes, tattoos=no. How gay is that?

The more probable situation is that they are officially diagnosed with asthma after they are already enlisted. I have quite a few patients who have asthma even though that can keep many people out of the military.
Diagnosed 9 years ago.
Will be puffing meds and inhalers rest of my life.
So does this mean if I want to enlist they won’t accept me?
Asthma is a disqualifying factor. If you attempt to enlist, despite advise a recruiter may provide to the contrary, do not lie about your diagnosis. If you have an asthma attack in boot camp, and they determine you lied, you will likely be discharged for fraudulent enlistment. With your inhaler and meds, it doesn’t sound like you can be particularly stealthy about your diagnosis anyway.
I hear that waivers can be obtained. If you need an inhaler and meds, the Marine Corps may not be the best option anyways.
I was diagnosed at 10 years old and tried to enlist in every branch of the armed forces and was denied by all of them. If you have been diagnosed and it is in your medical records, you will be unable to enlist.
Just out of curiosity, what meds are you currently taking? How often do you use your rescue (fast acting) inhaler?

I applaud your enthusiasm, but as a former Marine I can tell you that if you do have asthma, life in the corps would be hell. The amount of cardio endurance required is quite high. If you can work yourself up to the point of being able to run 10 miles in less than 80 minutes without using your inhaler then perhaps a waiver might be ok, otherwise I recommend against it.

I had an image in my mind of the OP as a recruit wheezing while getting the dogshit PT’d out of him on the quarterdeck. He would be dropped so fast it’s not funny.
Funny story, when I was getting registered down in Brooklyn they gave out these forms to fill and one of the questions was have you ever used an inhaler so I said yes because when I was in like fifth grade I had pnemonia or something which made me use an inhaler for a week.
But then these guys thought I had asthma so I had to get all my medical records from like 9 different doctors to prove I was healthy.
My recruiter was pissed off which pissed me off because why the fuck is he getting mad I’m the one who might’ve got permanently disqualified…
But yeah I was stupid I shouldn’t have brought up something irrelevent that happened way back in fifth grade.

They won’t let you in. I developed asthma while in to the point I now take prednisone and I still am having issues. I can only run two miles in 15:30, and I thank god I can do that. Hopefully the new interlukins or whatever they call them will get me back to normal.

Asthma is something you are born with. A common misconception is that it can be outgrown. Not true, some people just won’t have the the same triggers or flare ups because as they grow, they’re airways are bigger too. But the asthma is still there. Some people (like me) don’t start having symptoms of asthma until they are older. I’m not exactly sure why, but here’s a good resource. http://www.mnasthma.org/mnasthma/

I have no fucking clue. One day I could breath, and the next I couldn’t. Confirmed with a spriometer test.
Army Reserves here, I had my first full on attack while in basic training, I was scared shitless of failing the diagnostic run that I ran that mile in 6:30(fastest I’ve ever run). I kept my mouth shut because I wanted to finish and get the fuck out of there and basically tried to keep any problems on the down low.
I know most of my triggers (i.e. cold air, allergy season…etc) and I have an intal inhaler for the morning time and an albuterol for a “just in case” I’m able to do my thing in the Reserves with it though I’ve never gone to the medical board for it (nor do I want to since I was told if they found enough cause the Army could riff me out on a medical discharge).

Sorry to hear that. It is strange indeed. The reason I asked is because a doctor once told me I have ashthma and I have never had any problems with it. So I wondered what would cause a problem.
I was disqualified from joining because I have asthma.
Don’t say something like this in the Politics Forum though. Apparently Asthma = Cowardice to some scumbags there.

Could you please explain to me there reasoning for asthma = cowardice?
I was disqualified because of asthma. Yet, I played football, wrestled and ran track in High School. I was more in shape physically than 85% of the recruits coming in.
You, can control asthma and live a really high quality athletic life. Lifting, running-distance and sprints, and eating right. I am still in better physical and athletic shape than my friends who went to the military.
Words from one asthmatic to another. Don’t let asthma control you. You, control asthma. Trust me, people are surprised to find out I have asthma. Good luck.
