Assistance makes me do women’s push-ups

Hey!

Read the book. Awesome. 5 young kids… on limited time template.

I just spent 70mins doing agile 8, jumps, 100 push 50 pull 100 leg/core

8 Sets of 13/12 for the push-ups and squats, 7/6 for the pull-ups doing:

Women’s pushups (3/4 push-ups)
Bodyweight Bulgarian split squats
Eccentric pull-ups

I am EXHAUSTED!!! I can cope with the time but wonder if I’m pushing too hard (even though the variations I’m doing are puny as it is!)

Do I a) stick with it
b) do easier variations of the above (?!?!?)
c) something else

Am I doing something wrong?

Main lifts are 85% TM
Squat 75kg
Bench 62.5kg
Deadlift 125kg
Press 40kg

98kg weight (218lb)
Age: 39
Height 6’3
Been lifting 1 year, doing 531 for 5 months

I’m guessing you’re exhausted just because you’re new to this and the program, not because you’re necessarily pushing too hard.

For what it’s worth, I think your assistance choices are good and will allow you to modify less as you progress. Also, you don’t really need to worry much about pushing bodyweight exercises too hard.

Too many that are out of shape or really need to just get stronger pick assistance exercises like curls, tricep extensions, and calf raises and wonder why 531 “didn’t work” for them.

You’re messing up! Follow Jim’s advices!

After your warm up, set a timer for 20-30 minutes. Get as many total reps in as you can in that time. Progress by getting more and more reps in that same time.

Remember, Start Light and Progress Slow, you don’t need to crush yourself right out of the gate.

I would love to do this (and could really do with the time saving) - where does he say that?

Are you speaking about this:

Because I meant I’m following the limited time template in 531 forever book not this one.

But I guess I could combine the two by setting a time for my assistance work?

Hey - five kids, congrats. Maybe lay off of the wife for a bit, what are you, in Utah?

Figure the days out of the gym are assistance exercises just prepping you for your lift days and don’t sweat it. Do the best you can and go hard in the gym.

Yeah on this template I lift Monday Friday and do bodyweight assistance twice a week

Lol I just love having loads of kids around. They’re more fun than grownups. One wife though. Not from Utah

Agreed. Mine are 21 and eighteen now.

I was just effing with you.

Arizona?

Some other Mormon state?

Have you thought about doing 531 on a two day a week split? I think there is a template. It would be Deadlifts and OHP on Friday, Squat and Bench on Monday, or some derivative of that.

Reality is you are getting old (this from a sixty year old) and you have kids. Do what you can do, do it to the best of your ability, and call it good.

Play with the kids!

Yeah man, that’s the one. I can see how it’s confusing, it looks like there are a few different Limited Time templates floating around.

But, yeah. Timer for assistance so you’re not in there all day.

Honestly though, you have Tons of options. The important thing is that you keep it consistent, and then make some progress.

You could keep the moves you picked, and just start with less reps. Like instead of starting with 50 and 100, you start with 25 and 50 total reps and build from there.

Or you could pick slightly easier moves, like Pushups with your hands elevated or Inverted Rows and regular Lunges so the 50/100 reps don’t crush you so hard.

The timer is cool because it keeps the workout short, and hopefully that keeps testosterone high and cortisol low.

Yeah I’m from the UK and no Mormon! Just a pretty standard born again Christian who wants a big family.

I really don’t want to admit to myself I’m getting old now so shush.

The template I’m on from 531 forever is 2 days lifting, 2 days jumps/assistance (so looking forward to just sticking it on a timer) and 2 days mobility/cardio.

It’s just the 100 push pull legs that was killing me!

Squats/Bench Monday
Assistance Tuesday
Mobility/Cardio Wednesday
Water fast Thursday (to pray and lose weight at the same time!)
Deadlifts/Press Friday
Assistance Saturday
Rest/Church Sunday

Thanks for your help guys. I appreciate your years of experience.

No, you shush, lol.

I appreciate the gentle admonition. I have two kids, don’t feel the need to add more.

Rock on!
