Arnold Press vs. Normal DB Presses

Been doing these for a couple weeks as a changeup, can someone tell me what they work differently from normal dumbbell overhead presses?

Looked high and low for my copy of Arnold’s Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding. Arnold gives a few benefits of the press in the book. Typically the book is in hiding and won’t be found.

Off the top of my head:

-more range of motion.

-stimulation of front deltoid at the beginning of the movement leading into more stimulation and stress on the middle delt at the top of the movement.

Would say, it’s a longer range of motion than the normal db press which should recruit more muscle fibers.

Seen any progress with the Arnold’s?

Wouldn’t that be the other way around. Maybe not, but it works more of the shoulder then standard DB press imo.

Try the search button. There’s a lot of old threads about this.

Don’t do Arnolds: They’re really bad for your shoulders. Normal DB or military presses are sufficient.

Why would you say that. I’ve been usuing them for quite some time with nothing but results to show.

Second that, I’ve never heard anything negative about them, and never felt anything but a bit improved/longer ROM when doing them in the past.

They have worked ok for me…I alternate them with other pressing movements.

I love them, been doing them forever.

From the Arnold Encyclopedia… Page 272.

“To develop the front and side heads of the deltoids. This is the very best deltoid exercise I know, and I always include it my shoulder routine. By using dumbbells in this manner - lowering them well down in front - you get a tremendous range of motion.”

Yeah I wouldn’t say they are bad for your shoulders, works great for me as well.

Biggest benefit is a longer time under tension particularly for the front delt (each rep takes a lot longer with an Arnold press than a regular press and the front delt never really gets to rest) and you also get a little more middle and rear delt stimulation with the extra movement of the upper arm. I don’t think they are inherently bad on the shoulders but they can bother some people’s shoulders, at least with the form I am familiar with.

less tricep involvement

I have not had a problem with arnolds. No injury, and include them frequently.
