Are Olympic Weightlifters Athletes?

Fuck she’s fat.

As much as I’d like to say she’s not athletic, I have to say that she is according to many definitions in the dictionary, which puts being an “athlete” (gee, imagine that) high on its list of what it means to be athletic. People who say things about her not being able to run very well, or do any number of jumping, sprinting, etc, are missing the point that athletes are not supposed to be able to do pretty good at everything, they are only concerned with doing one thing at an elite level. If they wanted to be decent at everything, they’d be a crossfitter.

I get winded after my max snatch attempt. so no, I am not an athlete. but that’s okay, I have fun anyways.

You brought this back from the dead to post that? Really?

Some guys are real hypocrites. Men lifters can often be as fat as they want and no-one comments, but women…nooo…

And HOT too!

Oh erm, hang on a minute…

Weightlifters come in different shapes and sizes.

Anyway, here is one hot female lifter.

First off: YES she is hot. There is nothing like seeing a hot chick lift heavy weight.

Having said that; watching her knees buckle in when she squats makes me cringe. Her coach should really correct that.

Yeah the ‘athlete’ thing was reminding me of the ‘fitness’ thing and all the definitions of that that there are…

I guess in the popular conception there are a whole bunch of ‘athletic qualities / traits’ (for want of a better expression) that we typically think all come as a package deal. Things like strength, power, flexibility, endurance, body composition etc. When people display some of those traits but not the whole package there can be a bit of a question as to whether they ‘really are athletic’ or not. When some people only display one of those traits then the issue becomes even murkier.

On the other hand we might think that if a person is performing at olympic level then they are paradigmatic of athletic (so if they don’t meet our definition of athletic then the thing to do is to alter our definition).

Here is a schema for this kind of debate:

Blip is defined as:
trait A, trait B, trait C
Some people we take to paradigmatically exemplify Blip are:
Person A, Person B, Person C (where these people have traits A, B, C)

Here is a person who has A and B but not C. Are they Blip? (do we prioritize our intuition that they are Blip, or prioritize our definition of Blip?)
Here is a person who most (but not all) think is Blip. They don’t have trait A. (do we revise our definition of Blip? Or should we revise our judgement that the person is blip?)

Who the f*ck cares is my general motto about that…

It had been almost 4 months. I really thought this thread was toast.

She’s snatching 56% of bodyweight… I’m not impressed.

The Olympic motto is “Citius, Altius, Fortius.” = “Swifter, Higher, Stronger.”

Koing

she can snatch and clean more than me so I guess that’s +1,

She weights like 200kg -2,

therefor -1 overall.

Is she an athlete… yes in the general sense but I have to say no.

Most of the guys to 94kg are condsidered at the very least in shape, a fair % of the 105 guys are also in shape but not as lean but the 56-85kg guys are pretty dam lean at the top level and lower down also. It’s the super heavy weights where they don’t particularly look like they actually work out until you see them.

Sure it isn’t the healthiest thing for her to have 10kg of fat around her stomach but she sure is dam well an athlete with a lot of power that shames most of the guys here.

Lets see videos of you C&J 120g…yeah thought not.

If you had watched the European championships last week you would have seen this. However, Chigishev looked quite athletic although bulky compared with Steiner, Vilic etc who weighed more.
