Anyone in Birmingham AL?

Oh and I second rugbgods comments on your crew. You had some strong sons of bitches with you especially for your weight classes.

Rugbgod I just recently graduated from UA and plan to return for my masters. And yes I knew a lot of the rugby players, I played on and off my fresh/soph year was going to return for season my junior but then broke my left hand and started to focus on PL. Do you play for a local mens club? I live down in Miami, FL now and are probably going to join one of the ones down here.
I played for a long time, most recently for B’ham, but I’m old and retired now. PL is my preferred way of destroying my body now.

If you played at Bama recently then you know Seitz. Seitz and I go way back (20+ years) and played on the same sides as well as against each other. Also, we both probably know too many of the same players to bother mentioning on here but I would bet there is a decent chance you and I might at least recognize each other.

kilpaba,

I tried PMing you, but alas the interwebz will not allow it. I would definately be interested. Icon is great, but it’s difficult to get in and out of being off 280, with no shower, around work hours etc.

Icon is great, and Jeff is a wealth of knowledge. Unfortunately, it seems like most of the training that goes on there are with middle age+, people who are broken, are housewives.

The equiptment in there rarely gets put to it’s intended use. For example, people laying on the bench using jump stretch bands for ab exercises or to help them do pullups. There are definately legit high school kids working there, but alot of them are just wasting their parents money. There’s one guy there (Matt???), that has lifted a few times when I was there that was a legit oly lifter, I have seen some legit powerlifters, but the atlas stones to be unturned.

I am skinny and weak and most likely not on your level, but I am definately interested in training.

Anybody going to the SPF meet in TN tomorrow? My name is Jacob. I’ll be helping out at the meet. I’m looking to get into competitive power lifting, so i’m going to the meet to get a feel for the routine. Come look me up if any of yall are there.

I’m from Birmingham, and the ONLY powerlifting gym is Icon Performance, formerly Birmingham Barbell. It’s in Cahaba Heights, about 1/2 a mile from the Whole Foods on 280. Depending on what part of Birmingham you’re in, it can be a pretty good drive. It’s pretty small, they are closed on Sundays, and their hours can be a bit wonky, but Jeff Green (the owner) is literally the coolest guy in the world. He’s locked me in the gym just to let me work out after hours on more than one occasion. Considering most gyms in Birmingham don’t even have squat racks…

Also, the guy who owns the powerlifting gym is Tuscaloosa is a total scumbag. He used to work for Jeff before he broke a $1000 bar and then never came back to the gym. He moved down to Tuscaloosa to open a “world class power lifting gym,” which basically included him getting a bunch of dumb, rich college kids to foot the bill while he lived out of his car. People can change, but if that place is anything like it was two years ago, I wouldn’t drive a hour down to T-Town to get screwed over.
What gym are you talking about catering to a bunch of “dumb, rich college kids” attending?

Charlie just opened up his gym this year, so you could not be referring to his. Worlds gym in ttown was good but got blown away during the tornadoes. The only other PL gym would be Temple. A bunch of the bouncers I worked with lifted there but its a small place. Now Northridge fitness is pretty dbaggy…

No, he isn’t talking about any gyms in town now.

I am in Crestwood area and recently finished my garage gym–janky, but enough weight, bands and chalk to do some damage. I’ve been running 5, 3, 1 for a loooong time. Numbers are…modest: gym PRs Bench: 270 Squat: 370 DL: 425 Press: 170

If you can train to the RockyIV soundtrack without feeling humiliated, let me know.
