Guess we can keep using this thread to talk highland, if the OP doesn’t object. Southeast, especially the Carolinas and Tennessee, is a hot bed of games. Comes from all the Scots settling down here. Did 3 early in the year and have 3 more lined up. Pretty lucky cause we have a bunch of local guys who compete and 2 orgs within a 100 miles. [/quote]
We’ve got a pretty great group of games here in CA too. I think I’ll end up having done 9 or 10 games this year. I did Lake Norman in NC a few years ago. Really nice games.
Well I did a pretty sad job last year, dead last out of the C class. I hope for more this year, whether or not i do well ill try to post a pic or two, maybe a video if they come out ok. I sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago, so we’ll see if that hinders me at all.
Last comp was Ringgold, Ga on 4 Sep. Took 1st in Master’s. Great festival and I actually got a chance to watch some of the bagpipe and dancing comps for a change. Next meets in Scottsboro, Ala on 2 Oct.
Hg Thrower, get a video unavailable on your link. Barge, glad to see you’re excited about the sport:). Great picture.
My backyard standards, no expense spared. Only 17’, plenty high for the wob and good enough to lob the sheaf over. Plan on making a metal, taller one next year.
Great thread and enjoying the advice and pictures too. I just did my first games in July here in Kansas (Ledaig Highland Games) and just 3 weeks ago did my 2nd games - the Kirksville Highland Games. Got to meet pros Chad Gustin and Dan McKim there and a host of other well known games guys and gals. My wife competed with me and we had a great time. I placed last in the C group and still thoroughly enjoyed myself. Will definitely improve a lot with the training I’ll be doing over the winter and early spring.
On kind of a funny note, I’m a former grip guy (certified COC) with a very strong grip and I’ve had a hard time releasing the implements when I want to. Have trained for 10 years on the grip stuff and it was always a case of hold onto whatever you have in your hands as hard as you can. Not so of course in the throwing events, lol. Which it’s taken me some time to figure out. My grip has almost been more of a hindrance than a help in the games.
Hey Guys and Gals. some of you read elitefts.com, and if you do, you know that they just added about 10 new folks to the q&a. 2 of them have serious highland games experience (also strongman, but who cares about that?)
Any way, the names are Amy Wattles and Steve Pulcinella. I have not read Amy’s logs so I don’t know how active she still is in HG, but Steve was a Pro HG Athelete from about 1997 til a couple years ago. he is an old fart like us (my age, 47ish) and he is considering going back in to the pro ranks instead of the masters. Owns a gym somewhere in that place that is somewhere east of the rockies, with the dragons and monsters and shit. Steve has a lot of great HG stuff on his log.
Anywhoo, if you want to check out their stuff, go to http://asp.elitefts.com/...rch&tid=116 and pick the name you want to see on the dropdown. also, put a single space (hit the spacebar once) in the search box, make sure their name shows in the dropdown, and click search, it will show you all their recent posts. Pretty cool!
I completed my second games in McPherson in september. Placed second in the Mens C. Honestly i didnt think i was all that good aside from blowing away the rest of the feild with 19 feet in the sheaf. If i hadnt been so tired i think 20 or 21 could have been the works. Just started buying equipment, have a 20lbs shot to throw as well as a heavy weight from Old Celt. Next season i plan on at least 3-4 games, as thats all thats within decent driving range.
I don’t have a regular 56# weight to throw, but I’ve got 45# plates with handles, would that be good enough to practice with or should I try to buy/build a real weight to work on technique? I’m not very strong but I’m pretty tall so at least my release point will be a little closer to the bar ha

I’d rather use a kettlebell
but the swing of the weight is what throws it off so building one with a loading pin a ring and some plates isn’t that hard or expensive
I’m in Oceanside (right next to Vista) and have always wanted to try out some throwing/HG event training. I know of some people that train the events around here, but I haven’t trained with them.
