Anybody Here Beaten Pre-Diabetes?

Hello all:

I just finished up with my doctor earlier this week & he prescribed me metformin - basically stating that I am “pre-diabetic”… To quote him directly “I should be treating you already as if you were diabetic”

Now, my father has diabetes & so does my aunt (family history) but I was wondering if anyone other lifters on this site have been similarly diagnosed with prediabetic symptoms & if they/you were/are able to combat/reduce your diabetic symptoms through diet, training, etc. I know “beaten” is a strong word but “manage” might be better…

In addition my wife is 3 months pregnant so I fully intend to be around for a long time to help raise our child so letting this go any farther is not an option…

Hope you guys/ladies can share your experiences/insights & advice on this situation.

I’m actually full blown Type II diabetic and I manage it easily with diet and exercise. I would suggest if your doctor has diagnosed you as pre-diabetic you take it very very seriously. The sooner you can turn it around the better chance you will have of preventing permanent organ damage.

The biggest kicker to those who go un-diagnosed for so long is that permanent damage occurs to the kidney, pancreas, etc. Once that damage occurs, it makes it that much harder to keep diabetes in check by diet alone. This is the reason diabetes will never be cured, well unless you replace all of your damaged organs. (People can feel free to argue with me on that… they’ll lose, but they can try).

Chances are you are slightly (or even moderately) overweight and have a lot of adipose tissue, the type around your mid-section and in-between your organs, meaning your stomach circumference measurements are bigger than your waist/hip measurements.

Do you best to lose as much of that as you can and you’ll get off the medicine and live a long and happy life with your new child.

I plan to do just that - over the years I fell in love with the powerlifting style & like a fool I thought weight gain in the gut was tolerable as long as my strength was up. Time to look for my thick striated abs under the adipose coating LOL & fall back in love with cardio…

Thanks for your kind words & encouragement.
