Also an ex non-runner who now loves it. My trail is 3.84 miles and I do it 2 or 3 times per week. I weigh 265 so I have to chill a bit so as to not destroy my joints. The weight is coming down though, can’t wait to be able to run a 10k. I don’t see me doing a full marathon, so I’ll set a goal of a half.
I generally do heart rate running, I keep a semi-arbitrary max of 158 and just adjust my pace to that. I’m improving dramatically.
I’m flat footed so I did have a saga all its own with finding some damn shoes that didn’t destroy me from the knees down.
I feel great while running. Dunno if it’s the vitamin D or what but running in the sun is great. Also helps my tan. I rock a Nike Dry Fit sleeveless shirt to help get rid of my horrible farmer’s tan, haha.
Sometimes, it’s easy to skip on going to the gym and just go for a nice run instead… especially if the weather is beautiful.

sleeveless shirt? i just lose the shirt altogether haha. for me it depends on how the weather is outside and the time of day. 80 degrees in the spring/sumemr is gorgeous but when its below freezing outside it is no fun. for whatever reason i like running in the morning a lot more then lifting and vice versa. theres no way id want to run consistently on a treadmill tho. it is just used to keep decent distance endurance during the winter time.

Totally. Done five ultras (50k, 2 50 milers, one 12 hr, and one 100 miler), and a few marathons. I haven’t done a good one in a while, and I’m really getting the itch to do it again.
thats amazing! i have a question if your still around here. i have been debating replacing my 200m sprints with 1k repeats. or even alternating them each week. good idea? bad idea? with the purpose of helping to hold a more consistant pace on runs around 8-10km
I used to be addicted to running, but ever since I went on a very low carb diet…I realized running was not a good idea without enough glucose. I used to pass out a lot. I now just walk up a high incline w/ my CloseGrip weight vest or do the StairMill (yes, 2x a week w/ my weight vest and sometimes without it). On other days, like leg or back days when I exert myself too much, I do a lower intensity form of cardio.

I couldn’t run in the sun for my life. Good job there!
repeat after me… High impact repetitive stress… Think carpal tunnel… But with the knees and hips in this case… Anyone that runs a marathon is crazy… The reseach I have read is that 50% of people that compete in those sports develop some kind of injury every year in the sport (mens health issue). Especially marathons. Almost everyone that I know who has run a marathon or runs too much has developed issues (muscluar, joint, or bone issues). And the cure??? Rest and resistance training. So much easier to watch the diet then go nuts with something that will destroy your knees. And where in any human history did anyone run 26 miles all at once. Never! LOL! Thats just common sense and tring to rationalize with someone who disagrees with that is just a waste of time. I personally think running is great but doing more then 5-8 miles at once is overkill…
