Any Cons of Eating a Lot of Fruit?

Hi, I’m eating 2 bananas and then 4 other small pieces of fruit (plumbs or apples) throughout the day. Is this too much fruit? Also, are there any negatives to what I’m doing?

Too much fruit for what? Are you trying to gain or lose weight?

I’m just trying to eat healthy, running a paleo + dairy diet because it seemed the most optimum for health.

It’s good for all the phytochemicals and fiber and stuff, but I read recently that 100% of humans have a genetic mutation that allows us to get fat more easily with fructose. This modification was certainly beneficial back in the day so we could survive when fruit was out of season, but nowadays it has lost its utility.

I eat paleo also. From what I remember reading, the best fruits are berries as they tend to be lower in sugar.

Dr Davis had this article about insulin spikes with some fruits, like bananas

Well I eat the bananas because of how cheap they are and how many calories you get out of it, I’m well aware they contain a lot of sugar.

I mean, if it’s causing me to get fat I suppose I will get the fruit intake in half.

I would probably just call that a metabolic pathway now, if it is ubiquitous.

And OP, any theoretical harm to come out of that amount of fructose consumption will pretty much insignificant. You are active (I assume) and eating paleo, which is a pretty healthy plan overall.

All the evils of fructose should be applied to morbidly obese soda-chuggers with fucked up metabolisms, not athletes. The studies calling fructose evil cannot be inferenced onto an active population with that much credibility.

Shelby has said that he doesn’t like too much fructose. Fructose is absorbed slower than glucose, so don’t have fructose PWO for the goal of replenishing glycogen. Shelby has also said that, let’s say you have 50g carbs in a meal, don’t get all of it from fruit. Have half from fruit, half from a starch like sweet potatoes, Ezekiel bread, etc. If you are eating a PWO meal with carbs (which you should), I think you are better off with less fruit altogether, and more starchy carbs.

Also, I recall reading that muscle doesn’t have the necessary enzymes to convert fructose into glycogen. The liver actually converts the fructose into liver glycogen. So it would make sense if you have too much fructose and your liver glycogen is already full, that fructose can be converted to fat.

Here is a recent news article about the fructose metabolism/obesity link.

You’re looking at your diet all wrong if you’re worried about a bit of fruit making you fat.

If your really concerned about the amount of fruit your consuming , stick with low glycemic thin skin ones and eat some fat with it, nuts or have a tbsp of olive oil.

5 fruits a day is really not overdoing it at all…

I wouldn’t worry about it, lol. All the worrying your doing will raise your cortisol levels whenever you eat fruit ;). It’s good just eat it.

Exactly. Additional fatty acids will help lower the GI of your meal as a whole.

It really comes down to your goals. Are they physique-driven (ie aesthetics) or health-driven?

I’m more health driven but I would like a decent physique. I would hope that it’s safe to assume if one eats healthy they will have a decent physique.

What’s a good paleo-friendly source of glucose?

Fruit: Berries, oranges, plums, nectarines, peaches, apples.

And supplements for peri-workout.

I thought fruit was mostly fructose?

Am I wrong, or there’s no “glucose” only for strict paleo people (this is mostly for my own knowledge/curiosity).

Thanks.

It depends on what your goal is and how you respond to a certain amount of carbs. (I know that you already wrote what your goal is). If you are working out hard enough and your overall carb total is within the confines of the range within you perform and feel well, then by all means you are not eating too much fruit. Note that that is a two pronged answer.

If depends on both how well your perform with X grams of carbs, and it also depends on exactly how hard you are working out. If you are busing your ass and respond well to carbs, then you are probably just fine at 5 pieces of fruit daily.
