Has anyone out there attended any of Tony Robbins’ seminars? I just came back from one in Boston (“Unleash the Power Within”), and I was expecting a bunch of you-can-do-it-rah-rah crap, but it was actually really cool.
I’m not talking about his ideas on fitness and weights which were absolutely ridiculous as far as I’m concerned (be a vegetarian, no more than 20g of protein needed per day, no dairy, etc., don’t drink water during or after meals only before,) but as far as his speaking and life-tactics are concerned, I really was blown away.
And I was expecting to be sitting in a room with a bunch of middle-aged housewives fed up with their lives, and pitiful work-a-day office clowns, but when you realize that a group of the most successful people from EVERY walk of life are sitting there (from politicians, to pro atheletes, to business sharks), that says something to me.
I’d suggest anyone out there looking for a change in their life’s direction give it a shot. G’head and agree with / flame me as you see fit.
Yeah, I’ve been to 2 Competetive Edge seminars. I have to say they were the most important factors to my success in business today. Yeah, many people think he’s a dick, and it’s all bullshit, but guess what guys, if you take his stuff, learn it and apply it, you’re guaranteed success in whatever you do. I owe a lot to the methods he teaches in every aspect of life. The techniques can be applies to learning anything, working out, sports, business etc…
I had a great time at the seminars, and they are worth every penny. And you’re right, the room is packed with the most powerful people in all aspects of life. I went to the seminar at madison square garden, and it was mindblowing and life changing. It’s very easy to abuse him and what his methods look like on the surface, but if you look past that and make it your own, it is some powerful shit.
Sigh… that vegan nonsense… Tony Robbins is what got me into that mess. On the bright side, I was about 200 pounds of lard, and that “food-combining” diet caused me to lose about 50 lbs in a couple months (I shudder to think how much was muscle). And my SAT went way up.
There are some good things in there, but take it with a grain of salt.
believe in your self. 2) set goals. 3) follow through. 4) work hard. 5) do something you enjoy doing. 6) the more you know the better off you’ll be, so take the time to read/ learn. That’ll be $240.00. You can buy my audio tapes for an additional $99.99, and my 4 books for only $25.00 each. Don’t forget to attend my seminar this saturday at the Rosemont Holiday Inn, tickets are only $75.00.
Robbins is a salesman, and what he sells is himself. he offers nothing but commonsense information packaged for those who can’t or won’t do something unless someone else is telling them to do it/ how to do it. or, in other words, what earth shattering information did you receive for your money that you couldn’t have figured out on your own?
I’m trying to reply to your post with an open mind: of course he isn’t presenting info that isn’t “out there” in the public domain to be discovered by anybody who knows how. He doesn’t have some secret that can’t be discovered by anyone.
But if everything were as simple as you seem to believe it is, then why do the most successful people in the world who already have everything that they ever wanted at some earlier point in their lives continue to go back to him: Greg Norman, Skip LaCour, Sylvester Stallone, presidents of the United States, etc. To be honest, I was going there as skeptical as you are now and expecting to make use of their money-back guarantee; but I went in with an open mind and was blown away. You’ve got a closed mind and that’s the difference between our two approaches. Have you ever been to one of his seminars? I thought not. Reserve judgement until then.
I’ve only listened to his tapes, which have changed my life! They’re great! Alot of people bash him, but he’s a REAL T -guy. He’s worked his ass off for what he has gotten in life.
I went to the Unleash the Power Within seminar in 1996 and I thought that there were some great and lame aspects of the seminar. Meeting other people there that are really focused on being successful(money, relationships, spiritual ect) was very inspiring and fun. It is rare in life that we are in a room full of a thousand people that have a burning desire to improve their lives.
Tony’s goal setting and take action takes were cool and really helped me focus on how to get what I want.
The lame parts of the seminar were the "Touch feely" aspects in which you are hugging people next to you every five minutes, dancing like a fucking idiot, and getting a massage from your fat ass neighbor. Also, some of the guided meditations were flaming as hell. "Put a videotape in and imagine your life several years from now and you have not achieved your goals." People were freaking out around me and crying and all kind of hysterics. Pretty silly. Finally, at the end of the semminar, everyone put their arms around each other and sang one of the gayest songs of all time by starship: "We can build this thing together" something like that.
I am a very cut and dry guy and just want the information. You don't have to sugar coat od for me, just give it to me. Thus, I like Richard MArcinko's tell it how it is approach more than Robbins. Nevertheless, if you can cut through the fluff, Robbins has a lot of high quality info.
We had to work with a guy that talked EXACTLY like Tony Robbins. You would have thought he was doing a really good impersonation, but he wasn’t. Now, how many Robbin’s seminars do you have to go to before you start to talk just like him all the time? It was so funny, we would almost be in tears. Robbin’s can certainly get people focused.
I never have seen him in person but I have heard the tapes. There is inspiration to be found, he DID come from nothing, he WAS as broke as broke can be, he DOES help some people. the thing about the tapes is that for most people you get amped up for a little while then it slowly dies down, like I said maybe in person it has a longer lasting effect. but there are things to gain from hie tapes, if you use them strictly for motivation I think the effect can be fleeting. But if you use HIM as motivation and you relize that he is correct, that if he can do it you can also, you start to incorperate more and more positve things into your life. YOU are responsible for your life. peace
Heytey, you’re right, some people do get that immediate lift, then slowly die out. That is why Robbins went from NLP to NAC. NLP was for immediate change, without a way to keep the change for longer periods of time. NAC takes the basics fundamentals of NLP and combines them with techniques to follow through consistently. This is what the personal power II program is about. Some of his books and recording were done before he updated.
The thing about the whole “Tony Robbins phenomena” is that it’s not Robbins who is doing the work. It’s you who are doing the work. He is teaching you ways of “running your brain” to get the results you want. Tony Robbins can be the biggest dick on earth, but it wouldn’t matter becuase if you apply what he teaches, you’ll find it works.
It's the same as if Charles Poliquin was a jerkoff. Does that make his training programs any less effective? Many people hate Mentzer, but did people see results from his philosophies? yeah. Also, whats with people killing Robbins for not inventing what he teaches? Shit, did Charles Poliquin invent sets and reps? No, but he puts his own spin on it, and he gets results. Ian king didn't invent squats or curls, but he pushes them as a way to grow legs and biceps. Is he worng for doing that? no.
I’m not impressed with the fact that Clinton, Sylvester Stalone or Greg Norman follows this guy. Hell, Tom Cruise and dozens of other stars are Scientologists but I’m not about to waste my time, money and effort to become one just because they believe in it. But you might want to look into it, because those people are succesful, and if succesful people are doing Scientology, then it obviously makes people succesful. Thats logic for you, huh? People want their information pre-packaged. A lot of people want to be told what to do, although what they’re told to do is exactly what they would have done anyway. And Robbins is just another in a long line of snake-oil salesmen who is exploiting that. Who Moved My Cheese is the big business book of the moment. 5 years ago it was The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Before that The Art of War had a run as the must-read business book. Robbins is the Who Moved My Cheese of the business/life plan gurus. 10 years ago it was someone else, 10 years from now it will be someone else. But if you want to waste your money getting common sense advice from this guy, go ahead. Its your money and your life. And, because I’m a nice guy, I’m going to give you this little nugget that i usually charge $499 for for free: have a life plan and follow it.
Eag, you make some very good points. Really what Tony teaches can be found for free at any public library in the US. However, some people are attracteed to his pitching style and get a lot out of hos books and seminars and are willing to pay the price. Personally, I like Richard Marcinko’s style. In the end, you are right and it is up to each person to have their own life plan and go for it. Nevertheless, a little motivation here and then can be helpful. By the way the “Art of war” is a great book and I have applied its teachings everyday in the business world and I am doing pretty well for a 27 year old religious studies major
Anyone ever read “Self Reliance” by Ralph Waldo Emerson? It is an essay you could read in under two hours. I hate literature with a passion, but just last night I was taking an open book final exam in great books class. Our textbook is the norton anthology of literature. I started reading that article and spent a whole hour reading the thing and just ignored my test. I suggest you read the essay. Emerson must have been an early T-man.
