Another Gun Thread

I would suggest getting a Glock for a pistol. Either the Glock 17 or Glock 19, depending on hand size.

I have carried the Glock 19 daily for two years. While my hands are large enough to have a small part of my palm hanging below the grip, it’s not enough to be bothersome, so YMMV. Yes, I do find the G17 to be more comfortable to shoot but for carry I find the G19 easier to conceal. For the record, I own both so I’m speaking from experience.

I have over 10,000 rounds fired on this G19 with not a single hiccup. No joke The only thing I have replaced on it is the recoil spring just for preventative maintenance. It was still doing fine at 6,000 rounds when I replaced it.

I have taken it through 3 firearm classes, two pistol and one rifle, and have shot several IDPA matches with it.

For rifles, I’m partial to the AR. Nothing wrong with the AK, but if I could only have one it would be the AR. Pick up a quality 16" AR and it will cover 95% of your shooting needs when push comes to shove. I have a 10.5" AR15 with a supressor and 16" AR and they both run great. I’ve got ~5000 rounds through each rifle. I shoot a lot. I test my weapons. I don’t run two mags through them and then deem them reliable. Running a firearm hard will test it in ways that just target shooting can’t. On that note, I wouldn’t recommend the XD as it seems to not hold up during pistol classes. After the Glock I would probably pick up the S&W M&P9.

Most importantly, take training classes to know how to run your weapons effectively.

ETA: Like someone else said, go to AR15.com and spend a few DAYS reading the info on that site. Yes, it contains that much info. Don’t get all your information on a forum that is dedicated to something else entirely. There are lots of misconceptions with firearms floating around out there. The sound of a shotgun being racked will scare burglers away? Laughable. 20GA may be better than .45ACP for HD but only because long guns > handguns. The 20GA is still far from desirable from HD duty.

Good luck with your decision!

I think that I’m choosing a shotgun so far, but my second choice was a Springfield XD compact .45.

You say you test guns with more than a few clips. What was your bad experience with XD’s in gun classes? How many rounds, etc? Thank you very much

whatever. i got like 3 confirmed kills with the muzzle of a mossburg crusier like last year.

i would at least SUGGEST you look at a carbine demon. much greater accuracy than a handgun, with none of the recoil of a shotty. remember, it’s not like you’re going to be standing there in a soild shooting stance against the bad guy, any awkward position you have will only be magnified by the recoil of the gun as well as the need to manipulate the weapon in order to fire again. where as a carbine you just pull the trigger again.

there’s a top-folding stock for shotguns that holds some shells in it as well. looks kinda cheap but actually holds up nicely, and if you want to play rambo you just fold the stock up and away you go.[/quote]

I’ll say that I wont “un-consider” any gun, but I don’t want to spend a ton of money. between 3-600$ would be best. What carbines should I look at? Even if out of my price range? I’m sure you’ll tell me that carbines are usually more expensive than that. Also, what’s the penetration like on a 9mm compared to 12 ga.?

like i said earlier, i’m a big supporter of the beretta storm. i think new in the box it’ll run you 750.00 However they’ve become pretty damn popular and you can normally find one that’s been previously owned and in great condition at your local gun store for cheaper than that. check out the pic i have of mine on page two of this thread.

penetration/expansion with 9mm will depend on the type of round you are using.

if you are worried about over penetration, you can check out the ‘air freedom round’

i recently went an saw a demo of drt ammo. while i personally have only shoot a magazine worth of rounds through it to check for feeding problems, it is currently the ammo i keep loaded for HD. check out the videos on the page for the part where they are firing it point blank at a steel target with no fear of fragments.

(yes i know marketing with them is cheesy with the two hot chicks, the ammo is still legit IMO)

Thanks for the advice. I am going the shotgun route, but will probably get a handgun/rifle within the year. No harm in having two guns bedside. Good to know about this ammo, thanks!
