@cyclonengineer @Bauber mum is going to look at handguns tomorrow, any suggestions for a “starter”. I really liked my econ friend’s SW 360PD but it has really strong recoil
A compact 9 mm like a Sig Sauer P365 is a great gun. The Ruger LCP II 380 is not a bad gun either.
Do you have any idea how she is going to be carrying it? In a purse / handbag or elsewhere?
How much experience does she have shooting a gun?
I am not as well versed as @Bauber but this heavily depends on what she plans to use it for. Concealed carry or just general enjoyment?
For concealed any small frame revolver in .38 +p. Revolvers can’t be beat for reliability.
For enjoyment get a semi automatic.22LR
I think she’s just considering it to keep at home and maybe in the purse since reports of criminal activity have been going up.
She has no experience and knows nothing about guns. Her friend has signed up for classes and she’s also considering taking classes/getting a gun/license and wants some ideas
Definitely have her take classes if not experienced. If she does buy one she will need a lot of range time to get comfortable.
Edit: make sure she learns how to clean it too. Fastest way to destroy a gun is not cleaning after use
She’s in Florida right? There’s probably going to be an abundance of competent teachers nearby. A handgun 101 type class should be a must to accompany the purchase IMO. Many of them provide handguns for the practical portions of the class, so she can take one prior to even owning it. The next step I would suggest is going to a nearby range and renting some guns to try out so she can make an informed buying decision. There’s a very high likelihood all three of these steps can be accomplished in the same location.
She definitely needs to take classes. I am glad she is going to.
J frames / hammerless revolvers are great guns to keep in purses. They have a heavier trigger and nothing to get snagged on making them safe for inside of a purse. Revolvers also can be much dirtier than semi-auto handguns and still function flawlessly. Revolvers also do not jam, but come with a lower capacity of ammo obviously.
I would implore your mother to visit a large store with a wide range of options and hold a lot of handguns to see what feels comfortable in the hand. If she is not comfortable holding it, she is less likely to practice with it.
Unless it is an AK. Then cleaning it is a sin.
@Bauber @mr.v3lv3t @cyclonengineer Thanks!
Week 3: Day 5
KBs: 25x10 alternating 1 arm-45lbs EMOM, 1x10 -45lbs hardstyle, 2x50-25lbs
Press: 3x2, 2x1-95lbs
- this was fun and got HR up, those extra 5 lbs make a huge difference, pretty happy w/ press
Update: so I weighed in at 106lbs this morning, so I’m up 3lbs over break. I’ve definitely been in a surplus + very not adherent. Speaking of which, I got hungry today and had 20oz bison+1/2 rack of ribs+ various other stuff, didn’t measure the ribs but at least 1200 extra calories. which puts me at 4k for the day oops… I’m not mad about the weight gain since it was intentional (actually expected more lol), but I do need a way to figure out how to be with family without gaining weight.
On the other hand, going up to 106-107 2-3x/year might not be a bad thing, even if it’s fat.
Warning: rant ahead
Going back to pissburgh today. Break was very good. Finally took actual time off.
New semester is starting. Was looking forward to a “chill” final semester… until I got roped into basically taking graph theory and real analysis 2 on top of actually taking linear algebra. We’ll see how that goes….
The biggest worry is actually the random English gen ed I’m forced to take. I thought it would be easy but from the syllabus, is going to be more work than anticipated.
fucking gender studies.
In hindsight, I should have done more work over break oop
On a similar note, it’s amazing how gullible I am. Every semester since spring sophomore year, I’ve told myself “this is my last maths class”. After the pain of last semester, I swore I’d have a chill final semester and underloaded. Guess who’s basically going to take 3 maths classes
the guy who roped me into real 2 is actually from a physics server that I joined from this site.
Hopefully after this semester, I’ll finally feel more mathematically competent to do econ.
You’ll have to let me know how that works out for you: I’m still waiting to feel mathematically competent in my field, and I’m 15 years out AFTER an MS and a PhD. (Haha!)
Seriously, though, good luck with your semester. I know you’re all business, so I’m sure you’ll kill it, but once college is done, it’s done: There’s no going back, so try to find some time for a little fun, too.
It’s not looking promising tbh.
I’ll try ![]()
I’ve been slacking the past 3 years in maths. Time to pay before getting my arse kicked in metrics. Still need to learn CS or my dreams of social network analysis are toast
Week 3: day 6 (yesterday)
Db shoulder press: 5x10/side-25lb db, superset w/50jumpint jacks, no rest btw sets
Hammer Curls: 3x10/side-15lb db, superset w/50jumpint jacks, no rest btw sets
Lateral raises: 7x10/side, 1x16/side-12.5lb dbs, superset w/50jumpint jacks, no rest btw sets
Tricep push downs: 3x10-30lbs, superset w/50jumpint jacks, no rest btw sets
- got HR up and felt good, nice easy pump
These will probably suck
This won’t be bad unless you are like me and think differential equations are easier than matrices.
You typically don’t have to do anything “real” for these classes. Just read the books, write some elegant BS of what the teacher wants to hear and you’ll get a good grade.
Week 1: Day 1
Squats: 1x10-50, 1x8-60, 1x6-70; 1x6,4-80kg, 1x8-70
Paused Squats: 5x4-70kg, 1x5-60kg
Lying leg raises: 5x20
Bench: 1x6-35,40,45; 3x6-50kg
Lateral raises: 4x12-12.5lb dbs
Conditioning: 4x(40sec bear complex-20kg+20sec rest), got 5/round first three, then 2 on the last round
- this was not as bad as expected, the squats felt really smooth and not 1/2 as bad as expected, the bench sucked but hey, that’s what I get for having not benched properly in months
Update
- diet adherence complete fail. I forgot how hungry this would make me and indulged in 6oz of cheese, putting me at 2400 for the day oops. I will try again tomorrow. Weighed in at 106.5 this morning. I want to be at 103 by May. I’m hoping that the new training stimulus will rev up metabolism
