Anna's Training Log Part 2 (Part 1)

@cyclonengineer I’m kind of struggling with something

My sorority sisters are super nice to me and try hard to make everyone, including me, feel welcome/included

I feel welcome, but don’t seem to “gel” with them, especially when it comes to group events. They get excited about ritual things, dressing up, going out/formals/mixers; I have a very hard time at these events.

I love seeing them have fun, but every time I’m at one of these events, I start daydreaming about econ research club or class/some paper I have been reading.
Rituals also bother me. For example, we have a “opening ceremony” and “closing ceremony” that we do every chapter meeting (~15min). I wish we could skip this, especially at the meetings around finals
Note: Although most of the stuff talked about at Chapter meetings could be dealt with on email, I actually like seeing everyone.

All that stuff comes with the territory of Greek life. Kind of par for the course. The rituals are there to try and bond everyone together in commonality (not all of them are going to like Econ).

It is worth going to those things just to support your friends. It’s usually easier to go and duck out early than outright refuse.

Exactly why I never joined a fraternity. I just hate the idea of being forced to be with people you don’t want to be with lol

I always go. I just don’t quite enjoy the events that much

I mean… I want to hang out with them… I just dislike the ritual, makes it feel forced

On a related note: they had a s’mores meet and greet event last night.
It was actually super fun.

I ended up eating half a bar of chocolate  not even good chocolate: dove milk chocolate. I guess I was hungry??

Recovery for squats right @alex_uk
Unironically, I actually feel pretty great this morning and nowhere near as sore as I thought I’d be given the work I did

Finally you’re doing it right! Double it up for deadlift days make use of the extra anabolic surge from deadlifts, combined with the mega anabolic chocolate (science!) you’ll be Becca Swanson in no time

You spelled cheese toasties wrong. Nothing is more anabolic than cheese toasties.

Haha fair point - realised I hadn’t eaten enough day before yesterday, ate two fried cheese sandwiches before bed and woke up about 3lb heavier so I can attest to their anabolic capabilities.

Fried cheese? Is that different from a grilled cheese sandwich?

It’s more accurate, haha.

My high school called them toasted cheese sandwiches

Marketing at its finest, haha.

We have sandwich toasters over here which don’t require buttering both sides of the bread, I guess it’s classify that as grilled cheese, but butter both sides make a sandwich and shallow fry it, that’s what I mean, which is probably the same as grilled cheese in the US? Grilled cheese sounds healthier so definitely some form of marketing ploy!

I consider anything not buttered cheese toast. So two slices of bread covered by two slices of cheese and then cooked in a toaster oven = cheese toast, which can be eaten as a sandwich or as two units of cheese toast.

Week3: day2 (yesterday)

Press: warm up, work up to single- 45kg, fail 50kg; 1x17, 13, 12, 8-25kg
Db plank crossover: 5x10/side-25lbs
Btn press: 3x(10-20kg+10 db flyes-7.5lb dbs)
5x(5thrusterd-35kg+10 deadbugs alternating)-emom

  • upper back pretty tight but didn’t feel too crap, press was quite disappointing mentally- in reality not too bad considering the circumstances

Updates:

  • Holy shit… Things are getting crazy. Tuesdays and Thursdays I now have 4 classes and minimum 1 meeting…
  • pilot data also came in and it’s also really bad- the thing has 1944 columns (5 sets of 48 statements, each with 2 gender versions and 2 ordering). It’s ridiculous because the pilot from the original study that mine is based on had 25 volunteers evaluate 50 statements…
With that said, I’m very proud of myself bc I’m doing this myself this time
  • had a really nice meeting with my first Econ prof. It was awesome! He gave me good advice about future directions and was very pleasantly surprised at my change in attitude towards maths. Apparently he thought I was anti Econ :joy: anyways, he suggested that I go for Econ and not Ob or marketing. Basically I’d do a predoc to get caught up on maths, then go for Econ, even assured me that the quals weren’t “that bad” (unless i go to cal tech). Something to consider.

Week 3: Day 2 (yesterday)

Bench: work up to 60kgx2, fail 70kg; 1x20-40kg, 3x10-40kg, feet up
Db rows: 8x10/side-27.5lbs
Close grip bench: 3x8-35kg
Conditioning: 5x(7powercleans+7burpees)-emom

  • not much to say- bench felt heavy but that’s expected, happy that I got 40kg for 20, still not a PR though bc I’m pretty sure I got 40kg for 15 sometime before I gained weight and could definitely do 20reps at an equivalent weight relative to bodyweight

Update:

  • I am feeling super stressed… I want to take today off but I don’t feel too crap physically and I’m probably going to need one Saturday bc I plan to do something ridiculous tomorrow. “Deload” is next week

PRs are absolutes. Relative strength (while super useful IMO) is something else. Both are worthwhile in their own way, but don’t minimize the one because it isn’t the other.

@cyclonengineer @Bagsy
I am reading a paper and realized that I’ve read 75% of the papers cited in the lit review
and listened to seminar presentations from the authors of 5 of them
This makes me happy

They don’t require it, but it’s highly recommended. Why would you want to miss out on the toasted butter?

Week 3: day 5

Deadlifts: work up to 120kg for 2; 3x5, 1x10-100kg @SvenG ; 5x10- 85kg (17min)
Deadbugs: 5x10/side
Squats: 4x3-3330 tempo
Conditioning: 10x50 air squats w/30sec rest

  • overall awesome workout, great way to finish off the program, really happy to hit 100kg for 10, the BBB sets were also smooth, tempo squats just for fun

On a tangent, I feel like my core body temp is rising or something, last night, I woke up covered in sweat and had to sleep with the covers off for a bit to dry off. My room couldn’t have been more than 40 degrees but it felt really good
