Anna's Training Log Part 2 (Part 1)

Power cleans are an anaerobic exercise .

possibly

I (inaccurately) consider exercises that make breathing difficult and elevate HR hard on cardio

They are hard on cardio because they are different energy systems.

Is it not then conceivable that being out of breath on ten reps of power cleans doesn’t really make a decent comment on your general conditioning level and more relates entirely to your ability to continue working hard through accumulated fatigue on that particular exercise?

I feel as if a person can be in great condition and still become taxed by ten reps of power cleans given appreciable load.

Even crossfit athletes seem to become out of breath from it

@kolyma I noticed that you’re back!
How are you doing?

possibly. I certainly don’t do powercleans very much

This is a sign less that conditioning needs improving and more than you selected the right tool for the job. The goal of general conditioning is to AVOID specialization. When we get good at things, we become efficient at them, which means we use less energy, which means we don’t create a stimulus on ourselves.

Dan John wrote about this

Doing the movement and being out of breath shouldn’t create a response of “I am not in good shape”, but “I have selected the right tool”. Consequently, doing the movement and NOT being out of breath should not mean “I am in shape” but “I have chosen poorly for my desired effect”

This is why, in my own training, I’m constantly altering the conditioning protocol.

Sets of 10 reps for power cleans goes against the main purpose of the exercise. Just like box jumps should not be done for high repetitions in quick succession, just like Sprints should not be done in quick succession. That is the first issue. I really don’t think the issue was conditioning or you not being in shape I just think you did an explosive anaerobic movement too much in a short time frame.

Cardio is not necessarily conditioning and I having read your log posts I have found myself thinking “that is not conditioning and is she using conditioning as an excuse to try and burn more calories” many times when you wrote conditioning and then noted your burners. You openly said a while back “For conditioning I do not want to do anything too hard” which is not an issue like you mentioned it is not your focus :man_shrugging:t3:

Here for me personally is where I think the biggest issue lies and PLEASE do not take this as an attack.
But you seem as if you are constantly replicating things you see other people doing even if they conflict with your training goals.
Honestly BBB which is designed for strength and SIZE conflicts with your goal of not gaining excessive weight… The only logical reason for you to even consider such a program is that a large portion of the forum are running it and getting good results.
Conditioning is not something, which you have admitted, you really care about nor particularly want to do if it’s hard… So why even care about it?

@kolyma just wanted to tag you tell you how much I love Yohan Liebert

I use them interchangably.

For my short sessions, I do go really hard

that’s true.

I’ve never done high rep squats and deadlifts consistently before and wanted to give it a try

beacuse “conditioning is magic”- I can push lifting harder if I’m cardiovascularly fit
It’s also somewhat part of my identity in a weird way.

I would prefer you use my approach in its entirity or not at all. You have your goals and I applaud your tenacity, but my approach absolutely won’t work for them.

I’m not just copying your approach bc it’s your approach. You just expressed it much more eloquently than most

It’s hard to get good at squats and deadlifts if I have to stop or do less bc I’m out of breath

I understand why you are. I am asking, out of respect for me, for the above.

Being “in shape” definitely helps but the requirement is pretty low.
Being larger helps more than being in shape. I’m sure you know this.
I’m not saying this to suggest conditioning should be avoided but I don’t think you’re truthful in your reasons.
