Updates:

  1. met with a grad student who shares my advisor (not the nit picky one). We had an amazing conversation about research, grad school… Turns out, being “all over the place” with research interests is not a bad thing AND he gave me a list of schools. Some of them look really good. He also said that he gets 8hrs of sleep most nights- I cannot wait for grad school
  2. it is AMAZING how nice it is to work with advisors who don’t nitpick. I presented my preliminary work for my independent project to my advisors (there are two of them) and they critiqued the CONTENT of the work, not the fact that some of the graphs weren’t perfectly aligned.
  3. I’m feeling down. Classes aren’t going as well as I’d like and I just feel stagnant/very mediocre…
  4. I’ve decided to cut all non-mandatory contact with my friend(that one) for at least a month.

-Pulling from a slight deficit

  • ISO pulls. Position the bar under pin’s (squat safeties), use a light weight and pull as if it was a normal deadlift. The bar won’t budge because of the pins.
  • PRACTICE, PRACTICE. The lift is a 3rd of a sport. Don’t view it as an exercise view it as a skill and practice technique constantly.
  • Speed deadlifts (if technique is dialled in).

Week 1: Day 4

Tier 1 Squat: 1x3-50,60,70,80kg; 1x5, 2x3-85, super set with 4 chin ups (for biceps), 1x20-65 @SvenG
Tier 2 Paused Deadlift: 4x5-60kg,super set with 4 chinups
Tier 3 Leg extensions: 3x10-50lbs super set with 30sec plank
conditioning: 5x(5 devils press-20lb Dbs+30sec air squats)

  • holy crap that was hard, squats actually didn’t feel heavy- guess I’m really owning 80-85kg now, the widowmaker was brutal, I wasn’t struggling to breathe too much and the weight felt light, but I was having a lot of trouble bracing and things got a little black towards the end, I’m supposed to do front squat for tier 2 but I figured since my deadlift was lacking, I’d tackle that. It felt good, really focused on bracing, did not want to do the leg extensions and definitely did not want to do the conditioning, but both were easier than expected to get through.
  • this program is a lot harder than I expected…

Updates:

  • I have a bit of a dilemma. Grandpa’s funeral is today/night (in China). The catch is that it’s at 10:30 pm. If he were alive, I’d stay up without thinking, but it’s the funeral… I do not agree with the notion of funeral rites. They are expensive, inefficient and, in the case of China, incredibly damaging to the environment ( burning large piles of paper lined with plastic).
My only motivation for attending is that it would mean a lot to mum.
    pls help

You answered your own question, I think. Your mom probably needs you there.

I’m going to do two things here that I’ve been trying to avoid for a while: comment in this log beyond answering specific questions or banter, and agree with @Cyrrex. This hurt more than burpees.

I’m confused. Are you in China? Would you physically go there? Is that doable?

No. It’s a zoom meeting. Just called mum. Decision made. I’m going for the first 10min or so

Turns out she didn’t actually expect me to go

But did she want you to go?

Yes, which is why I’m going

I tried to like this post but ran out, so consider this an IOU

Nice!

But you’re doing these… voluntarily? Or are they part of your programming?

Ah.

In that case, I’d highly recommend “attending.” You can do it from the comfort of your own room. You usually speak very highly of your grandpa; I think the least one could do is attend his funeral. I have no idea if some day in the future you would regret going, but if there ever would be regret I think it’s much more likely to be over not going. One lost night of sleep is a drop in the bucket. No academic success or workout program success will be severely impacted in the long term by one night. If it helps, it’s the last time you’ll ever be “obligated” to do something for him, so after the funeral, you’re good.

Not my life/family, so that’s just my two cents. Some of my family’s funerals are much more…intimate? special? I can’t think of the right word. We will dig the grave, lower the casket and seal it up, then fill the grave back in ourselves. I have no idea how common that is. I don’t think very. It’s what I plan to do for my grandparents/parents.

I have a “5+” set.
The program “says” front squat at 55kg for 5x5+, but I figured I’d get more benefit from practicing deadlift a la @hustlinghat93, so I decided to do the widow maker and then use paused deadlifts as my tier 2

The program was meant to be customized. The only thing set in stone is the tier 1 mainwork

Yeah. Mum told me that this isn’t so much a funeral livestream as it is a bunch of family members gathering to remember a great man

In that case, there’s no question of whether I’m going or not.

I’m opposed to the ritual stuff. This is different

Week 1: Day 5

Tier 1 Bench: 1x3-30,40,50; 1x4, 3x2-55
Tier 2 and 3- giant sets
Giant set: ng chins - incline bench - lateral raise - burpee
5x(4chins+5incline bench-35kg+10 DB lateral raise-7.5lb Dbs+5 burpees), 90sec rests
Rows: 3x(3/side-50lb DB+10 tricep pushdowns-22.5lbs), 5x(5 rows/side-45lb DB+5 burpees), 60sec rests

  • Given the work yesterday, I was feeling REALLY REALLY good, really pushed the pace on this one and super psyched afterwards- best workout in a long time, bench still felt heavier than expected though

Updates:

  1. The “funeral” was really quite nice. It wasn’t too bad staying up at all and I have new respect with my aunt. She coordinated this entire thing and delivered an beautiful response
The one silver lining to this is that my mum might get her visa to China expedited and could be back in China by early December. She’s been wanting to get back for a year and a half now and her going back means I’ll get gym access over winter break
  2. I have decided to cut off ALL non essential contact with my friend (that one). This is nowhere near no contact since we are in a project group and run a club together. What it means is no texting, no asking him to read my stuff, no private conversations unless he initiates. Distance will diminish the distraction.
I won’t have any classes with him for the remainder of my time here and there is also a high probability we will NOT be going to the same grad school, so there’s that.
  3. speaking of grad school, I met with a grad student who shares my advisor (the nit picky one). We had a great conversation about research, grad school live etc. If grad school life is anything like what he and others have described, I’ll be SOOOO happy. Apparently he even gets to sleep 8hrs most nights. He also gave me the list of programs he applied to and some of them look really good!

Week 2: Day 1

yes, I took 2 days off last week and do not regret it one bit…
This program is kicking my arse a lot more than I expected

Tier 1 Squat: 1x3-50,60,70,80,85, 90, 1x85, 1x10-75
Tier 2 squat (no belt): 4x5-75kg super set with 4 chin ups
Tier 3: Giant set: good morning- lying leg raises- chins
3x(8 good mornings-40kg+10 leg raises+4 chins)
DB snatches: 3x2/side-45lb DB, 60sec rests, 1x1/side-50lbs
Conditioning: 4x(3db cleans/side+4 squat)-55lb DB, 1min rest

  • felt okay going in but things went really downhill on the 4x5- I had a difficult time keeping my eyes open after the set and kind of just stumbled over to the pullup bar, ended up sitting on the floor for a good 5 min or so and felt a lot better. The good mornings were a LOT easier than expected and got the work in. Wanted to play around with DB cleans and snatches for conditioning so got that in a couple of hours later

Updates:

  • I met with my advisor yesterday… This project is never going to get done… I made a list of statements for the pilot test, he looked over them last week and told me to add more and fix the grammar typos. I do as he asked, and this week, he tells me to redo it and come back next week because some of the items extra spaces between the number and the start of the sentence. WTF??? These sentences are going to be randomized and dropped into a qualtrics survey with out the numbering thing anyways. Why does it fucking matter if there’s an extra space???
On the bright side, he gave me some more schools to look into. He seemed kind of surprised when I said I didn’t want to do first impressions research in grad school…

You really don’t get it, do you?

The hardest part for me is around the knee pulling sumo. Would you recommend semi sumo which would make it harder off the floor and easier at the knee? I can pull a lot more to my knees than I can lock out sumo.

At least this dude is nice enough to say what’s wrong. Just wait until you get one turned back and get told “fix this and don’t ever submit something like this again” with no instruction of what’s wrong.
