Is the friend you sent the E-mail too? Not going to touch much on that but people change, feelings change and pop up so take what happened in Summer with a grain of salt.
In the kindest possible way, I find this whole contract, E-mail process very weird. I find a young man who does not get freaked out by this and accepts a contract like this weird. Not saying this to be cruel my point is you are both different and similar… so what’s to say that he is not thinking the same as you? Who is to say that in the summer he did not want to go out with you but decided he did not want those feelings and acted like so?
End the friendship if he is easily replaced and brings nothing that others don’t… Unless he is is not so easily substitutable ![]()
Now the reason I wanted to comment. Well done for keeping the discipline and not doing more!!!
yep.
I ran this by multiple friends and they assured me that this type of thing is perfectly acceptable at my school. I told some sorority sisters about this and even they said it was cool.
The original contract also wasn’t anything outrageous.
Yet another confirmation that my school is a perfect fit for me.
I have yet to identify what makes others an imperfect substitute
Thanks!!!
All eyes on that squat PR!!
This kind of backs up my point of your school, friendship circle being a very unique bubble.
Hypothetical question. Let’s imagine you never sent him that E-mail. You like him but you are trying to not think of him because you need to focus on your priorities . Tomorrow you wake up and see in you inbox that he sent you exactly what you sent him, what do you do?
Do you confess you might like him? Or do you kindly reject him but keep him as a friend?
Without knowing the details of the “contract”, it seems a bit like Sheldon and Amy’s contract on “The Big Bang Theory” - which was played off as a funny character quirk.
If it works, it works, but not everything is a business transaction or needs a quid pro quo.
Is this a cultural thing that I’m not getting? This is too far out of my realm of experiences for me to understand, I fear. I don’t want to be disrespectful… but I’m completely lost here.
This makes so much sense now! @anna_5588 is a jacked and joozy female Sheldon!
yes I would
I did get a “big bang theory” comment from my HS friend.
My only knowledge of Big bang theory comes from the stuff I had to know for quizbowl
no.
I personally see it as a way to prevent things from getting too messy. I also think it’s efficient if expectations are laid out ahead of time.
My school/ social group is quite unique in that this type of thinking is accepted, if not encouraged. Granted, most of them are CS or Econ maths
In the show, those two had a “Relationship Agreement” which was quite literally a written contract spelling out requirements for things such as date nights, amount of time for physical touch (hugs and the like), what kind of movies were acceptable to watch, etc…
@anna_5588 - what TV shows, if any, do you watch? Any sitcoms or dramas or anything? Just curious, this has nothing to do with anything, but the Big Bang talk made me curious what another college student is into.
Mostly cooking shows (food research)
I also “watch” Psych and Monk in the sense that it’s playing in the background when I do mundane tasks (data entry, coding…)
I’ve gone through 5 seasons of each and have NO idea what’s going on
Same with most movies
I can’t have cooking shows in the background because I feel like I’m missing on a learning opportunity.
I started watching Monk with my mom probably eight years ago. We got more than halfway through the series, then stopped for some reason. About a year or so ago we started it over with my brothers, and we just finished the series a week or two ago. Episode to episode, there’s really no storyline. You can watch 90% of them at random and not be missing anything, but now that I’ve finished the series, there’s some things that were tied up, which was nice.
Same with Psych. For the most part, they’re just completely random stories, with some closure at the end. I enjoyed both shows.
I guess that’s probably the case for most comedies. It’s really the dramatic shows or serious crime shows that have important details/events in most episodes.
What about The (American) Office? It seems like every college student likes that. (I do.)
I played that in the background my first semester.
Went through all the seasons on Netflix, had/have no idea what happened
I can’t do that. I can play certain kinds of music in the background during things. I liked playing rap while I did math homework in high school. I really don’t like playing TV/movies and not paying attention to what’s going on though.
I can’t concentrate with music
voices are fine since it resembles doing work in a busy coffee shop, which is nice
Coffee shops can sure be cozy. One morning I was in one, and it was pretty early, so still dark, it was snowing, there was a fire going, and it had a big window facing the busy street as all the cars drove by. Just felt really nice. I like early/dark fall/winter mornings and seeing places “wake up” and begin their days.

Game theory is not going well at all. I’m reading the textbook, doing problems and paying attention in class but something just isn’t clicking. I have two classmates I’m friends with and they seem to just “get it”. In particular, one of them doesn’t read the textbook or really take notes in class but it seems to come naturally to her and she scored nearly 20 points higher than me on the exam. It’s not the maths this time, it’s the logic. I feel really dumb.
The bigger issue is that the stuff I want to work on in the future is game theory based, so I can’t really brush this off.
I thought I was getting discouraged because of my exam marks and impact on my gpa, but on second though, I’d still be as discouraged even if this class had no impact on my GPA
I’ve been spamming my friend (that one- he’s the TA) with complaints about this and I really hate to be this annoying
I think There’s also a self identity element here. I identify as someone who grasps Econ reasoning easily, and this is going against that. I’m sure if this were a maths or physics class, I wouldn’t feel so crummy
It always sucks when these folks are around, but typically there is at least one in every class.
Not everything you study is going to “click”. Game theory is advanced mathematics and a tough course. Forget where she scored - where did you score in comparison to the average?
Seriously, one B or C will not make or break your future. Get a tutor or go to office hours if you are struggling.
