No. Your upper body is already getting tons of stimulation from pressing and cleaning 3x a week.

Are there any schools near you that have sports fields? Parking garages?

There’s a private school 5 miles out. The nearest public place with stairs is 7 miles out… crossing 3 highways. Believe me, I looked this up when I first got here.
THe area I’m in is basically a retirement community. Old ppl and stairs don’t match :joy:
It’s not feasible for me since I’m crunched for time and don’t have a liscence

Do you have a bike?

no. Nor do I have a rower, eliptical…

It’s either weighted walks (putting weights in a backpack- a crappy one at that) or jogging/running or CF style workouts/circuits

I meant like a real bicycle, not a stationary bike. If not, borrow one from a friend/family, or buy a second-hand one. They’re 1) great for getting you places, and 2) a good conditioning tool.

For now, just alternate between jogging and weighted walks.

Unrelated, haha, but get your license. I think you said earlier that you don’t want to drive and maybe don’t want to own a car? Can’t remember exactly. You can still have a license without driving daily or owning a car. I started driving when I was 16 or 17, didn’t get my license till I was 19 or 20. Pretty dumb of me, but I got it the day before my job started requiring employees to have one. If I didn’t have it, I would’ve lost my job.

At 21 years old, and in a town without many public transportation options, I still don’t have my own car but I get around fine. I also don’t actually drive that much, especially when it’s not -40ºF outside and I can walk or bike. BUT I HAVE A LICENSE. Now when I need to drive for work, or when I need to take my little siblings or child somewhere, or when there is an emergency and I need to be somewhere faster than my legs can get me there, I have the ability to do so.

It’s a fairly easy thing that you can do to be prepared for any unexpected event that life can throw at you. I will be encouraging my siblings and son to start learning how to drive at a much earlier age than I did, and getting their learner’s permits (which I didn’t do), even though they probably won’t own cars or actually drive all that much during their teen years. It’s a good skill to have.

Also, yes, if feasible, get a real bicycle. I can currently see ones for sale for $98 on Walmart’s website. Can probably find a cheaper one on FB or whatever.

I’ll consider it. The biggest problem is that I bounce between uni, Florida and Shanghai and my parents (with the exception of COVID time), are in Shanghai and none of my friends have cars so idk how I’d practice (Dad has a car in Shanghai, but trying to practice in Shanghai is like trying to practice for the white belt test with a black belt LOL @dt79 )

I might consider getting a bike for uni, but considering that I have no intentions of going to grad school in Pittsburgh, idk if it’s efficient to get one. They’re pains in the ass to move. As for florida. After COVID, i’m probably going to spend <3 weeks out of the year here. I’ve already convinced dad to buy me a very nice bar and set of plates (which I’m going to set up as soon as mum goes back to China). They also bought me 2 KBs and a pair of DBs. Asking for any more workout equipment feels unreasonable.

Do you have to pass anything more than a written test? I know for a permit you do, but for the actual license I think it’s just a written test.

  • felt marginally better , still didn’t want to do it but decided to suck it up. Allowed myself extra rest btw rounds and , not as bad as expected. Heavier weights = less cardio effect, which was nice

No shit. I don’t even dare to drive in a less population dense and slower paced 2nd tier city. You all drive on the wrong side of the road anyway. Just like the Americans.

At least you’ll get to curse people for crossing the road when green light for the pedestrian crossing is on.

This is progress; you’re listening to your body and experiencing a positive feeling as a result. Love it.

You have to pass a drivers test as well as a written test, at any age. There are some states with waivers, but they’re either temporary or only issued with proof of drivers ed or some amount of documented driving hours.

Actually having a license is less important to me than having the ability to drive. I’m not a doomsday prepper or anything, but if the shit hits the fan and you need to get outta dodge, and you don’t know how to drive because you didn’t feel like learning, you might have some regrets. I’m all for less people driving cars around the planet, but, ya know, basic life skill in this day and age.

And I learned to drive and parallel park in Manhattan, and also got my drivers license in Japan. Don’t matter where you learn, in fact, the harder, the better.

now I’m good. Then, I was uncoordinated, nervous, and terrible. But nothing makes you learn to swim quicker than being thrown in the deep end, especially if there are sharks there. Learn to drive in Pittsburgh and Shanghai and you’ll be a BEAST.

I learned here, but got my license in VA. They are so nice there. Like “Oh sugar, come on over here and take this test (20 q’s, piece of cake,) and we’ll go for a ride 'round the block. When we get back your picture license will be ready.”.

Just super nice.

I jumped in the deep end of a pool when I was 5, almost drowned and my dad had to jump in and pull me out. Now I hate swimming.

Think it’s the other way around where I’m at. Written test to get a permit, then take the driving test to get an actual license.

Had he let you struggle just a touch more you’d have learned to swim that day.
