I have no interest in being in the military, but sometimes I want to test myself with crazy things just to see how far I’d get. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the drive to actually push very far
People who didn’t give themselves adequate nutrition ended up face down with a heat stroke, and had to have their pants pulled down and a large thermometer known affectionately as “the silver bullet” inserted rectally in full view of everyone.
If a walk in 85-90 degrees makes you dizzy, you will be risking your life by strapping on too much weight and walking for extreme distances.
It is a true test of mental fortitude - every step is an opportunity to give up, and your body will be screaming at you to do so, but given adequate nutrition, hydration, and sodium intake, you can push yourself pretty far.
Ouch!
I’m wondering, did having a group you didn’t want to let down help?
Also, any tips on dealing with the neck/trap pain? That was honestly the hardest part
Yes.
And the Drill Instructor who would hand chop you in the neck if you couldn’t reach out and touch the pack of the guy ahead of you at all times.
Think about something else. Nothing’s gonna make it hurt any less, though.
I guess it’s like grip in the swings challenge
Yes, except the point at which grip literally fails will arrive long before your body collapses from neck/trap discomfort.
This morning, I ended up with a pretty bad headache, bad coordination and numb hands from trying to hold the strap for “support”
The most annoying thing is that my heart rate barely got up and I still felt crap
Decrease the weight and up the tempo and you’ll feel better and your heart rate will increase (is there a specific reason you want a high heart rate?).
40 lb vest is a lot for someone who’s barely 90 lbs.
Well, I was doing it for cardio, so…
I don’t actually have a vest, I put my 25lb kettle bell in my backpack with some textbooks
Do you know what your heart rate was?
no, but I felt like I could talk and go for a lot linger if it wasn’t for my stupid neck and traps
There is an ideal range of where your heart rate should be, that depends on what you’re looking to get out of your session.
As a long weighted walk, you probably don’t want it to get too high. Being able to talk is a good thing.
You should test out your heart rate next time
What’s your resting HR?
between 50-60 depending on the temperature
What kind of backpack? How the weight is carried is going to have as big an impact as the weight over distance. It sounds like a lighter load, held closer to your body and pushing the pace would help more.
just a regular school backpack with some straps that I tie together
Try and keep the straps as tight as reasonable to keep the weight close to your centre of gravity, and lower the weight.
Yeah, I’ll definitely go for only 20-30lbs max and pick up the pace next time
Last time I was at my brother’s house (10 years ago?) I really liked riding a bike to the beach, snorkeling around for a few hours, then riding back. Everything was so flat and smooth its easy to get a nice pace and just keep pumping. You end up making your own breeze and staying cool too.
Overshot his neighborhood by a few miles a couple times though.
That’s unexpectedly high given the amount of conditioning you do
