For a relative beginner who’s deadlift is under 315, what would you recommend, in terms of training program, to give him the best gains? For ex. would you recommend going heavy each week while doing speed lifts a couple days after?
Also, which exercises do you feel have the greatest carry over to the deadlift?
Ok what i would do is give him a slow build up increasing weights each week but only in small jumps and then i would do 3 to 5 sets 3s of speed work all done in same workout and make sure he does not fail any weights in the build up

andy i know im needing to test my max and am planning to do so soon but in ur opinion should the weight im able to pull from low shin height be similar to the weight i can pull from floor.thanks bud
Ok for me i can do 950 from mid shin if the bar is sat at the correct height if its too high i did 1034 at age 22 so you can see there is a big change in weight so you must make sure the bar is sat mid shin no higher and it should be harder as you cannot use legs as much

Thanks for answering, getting to pick your brain about various deadlifting and training aspects is awesome so i echo everyone when i say thanks for taking the time to help us all out.
When you say you would have him build up slowly do you mean have him ramp up to a 1-rep set each time? Also, what percentage would be used for speed work and does it matter if it is done before or after the heavier sets?

yeah andy id say i set it about an inch or 2 at most heigher than a normal deadlift and yes its all bak mate.so u reckon i should be able to pull same weight or more from floor bud?

OK SLOWLY INCREASE HIS WEIGHTS WHILE HITTING 5S THEN GO TO 3 AS CYCLE GETS FURTHER IN. THEN MAYBE A DOUBLE BUT NO SINGLES NOT TILL THE MEET, AND SPEED WORK IS DONE AFTER REG DEADLIFTS AND DON’T MATTER ABOUT THE WEIGHT AS LONG AS ITS DONE FAST, IF IT STARTS TO SLOW JUST TAKE THE WEIGHT DOWN AGAIN

I WOULD SAY YOU WILL PULL A LITTLE MORE FROM THIS HEIGHT BUT IF YOU DON’T, DON’T BE TOO HARD ON YOURSELF. IT’S STILL WORKING THAT AREA HARD AND YOU WILL GET BETTER OVER TIME, GOOD LUCK AND LET ME KNOW HOW IT GOES.

yes do floor and shin pulls
Hey Andy another question. Do you think pulling from above the knees has any value whatsoever or is it simply a waste of time and energy?

For the deadlift it has no use but for grip work, set the bar high and use for grip only.
