Androgel Application

Even though I am not over 35 I thought this would be a better place to post this. How long do I have to wait after application to sweat. If I put the gel on at 7:30-8:00 am and do martial arts at 10:00 am will I be okay??

Thanks

5-6 hours after application. Pretty friggen silly. You sure you still don’t want to switch to injections?

I wonder if one could simply put the new patch on before bed?

Info on androgel

I put it on when I wake, and am in the gym about 60-90 minutes later. No problems at all. Remember the skin is the delivery medium, and most of the test in in your skin rather quickly.

The only really important factor is to put it on after you shower.

Thanks guys

T-nick- Thanks for the link. I would like to switch to injections (as alluded to in the AI and trt thread). And I think you may be thinking of a different product as androgel is a gel that you rub on.

Hankr- Yeah, I think it will probably be okay. I only do it like that one day a week.

Avoid roids- I always put it on right after my shower. I did it one day without showering and it felt like it just sat there on my skin.

I am taking Testim so I guess the rule would apply with this medication as well. Is it really crucial to shower before putting it on? I put Testim on in the morning when I first get up. I usually shower after work and training that night. Am I losing some benefit from HRT because of this? I started taking 500 mg of Niacin when I apply the Testim and haven’t experienced that “flush” that was talked about on the other thread that was posted on this forum. Should I increase to 750 or higher?

Thanks in advance for the suggestions!

Sorry, I have no experience with Testim. However, I imagine the same protocols would apply. You get somewhat better absorption if applied after showering. The real key is not showering for several (6+) hours after the application as it won’t have all been absorbed yet.

Are you taking Niacin or Niacinamide (aka “no flush niacin”)? If you are taking Niacin and you get no flush from 500 mg then try the following before increasing dosage: take it on an empty stomach, take it with a hot beverage, avoid taking it with cold food or beverage.

I have been taking it for over a year so I get a flush rarely at 500 mg. I increased this to 750mg and get a flush sometimes. Niacin is safe. It has been used in dosages of at least 3000mg/day for schizophrenia over long periods by Dr. Hoffer.

For safety and efficacy info google A. Hoffer niacin. As I recall there may be other measures one can take to increase flush. I’ll try and research it and post it up later today.

Word of warning; take care of your balance when flushing. I have been light headed a couple times and lost balance upon suddenly arising during the flush.

Good flushing to all:)

I have done a bit more research on Niacin. A note on safety and dosage from one of my favorite websites: Niacin Saturation and the Flush
"An important point here is that niacin is a vitamin, not a drug. It is not habit forming. Niacin does not require a prescription because it is that safe. It is a nutrient that everyone needs each day. Different people in different circumstances require different amounts of niacin.

Says Dr. Hoffer: "A person’s “upper limit is that amount which causes nausea, and, if not reduced, vomiting. The dose should never be allowed to remain at this upper limit. The usual dose range is 3,000 to 9,000 milligrams daily divided into three doses, but occasionally some patients may need more. The toxic dose for dogs is about 5,000 milligrams per 2.2 pounds (1 kilogram) body weight. We do not know the toxic dose for humans since niacin has never killed anyone.”

Inevitable physician skepticism and questions about niacin’s proven safety and effectiveness are best answered in Orthomolecular Psychiatry, edited by David Hawkins, M.D. and Linus Pauling, Ph.D. This nearly 700 page textbook is the standard reference for details on niacin therapy. Persons with a history of heavy alcohol use, liver disorders, diabetes, or pregnancy will especially want to have their physician monitor their use of niacin in quantity. Monitoring long-term use of niacin is a good idea for anyone. It consists of having your doctor check your liver function with a simple blood test."
I took 750 mg this morning on an empty stomach and I flushed hard for 45 minutes or so. I had just the first sensation of nausea so I have found my upper limit. Dr Hoffer has prescribed as much as 20,000 mg/day. He has found that even 40,000 mg/day is not toxic. His estimate is that toxicity may occur around 200,000 mg/day.

A couple of other notes: there is much to commend Niacin in terms of its usefulness in attacking cancer, improving cholesterol ratio, and treating schizophrenia. But readers of this board may find the following particularly interesting; Niacin is known to have a calming effect at higher doses, and I must say that this morning after doing a 750 mg hit I was a bit sleepy for a couple hours. I am going to start taking some niacin before I go to bed. Those of you who have bleeding gums should take Niacin.

Dr. Hoffer began Niacin for this reason and it has worked for me as well. Lastly, to increase the flush, besides the other things mentioned previously one can crush the pills into powder. I have not done this but I may back off to 500 mg powderized and see how that works. When all else fails and you are taking the highest dosage you want to take, fear not! Just quit taking it for a few days and then resume your regimen. The flush should return.

Just to followup: powderized 500 mg Nacicin this morning and flushed within 5 minutes. It works well and you can back off the dosage.

Good flushing!

Could you guys save me the time of trying to figure out what you are talking about with taking so much niacin. What is the flush for, benefit wise, and how does it help the androgel?

Thanks

Editted to add:
Nevermind, I figured it out, I’m going to give it a try

If you shower after MArts, put it on then. I was on Androgel before injections and found when I worked out or played racquet ball 5 or 6 hours after application 3 or 4 times a week, then showering, I think it threw off the absorbtion. As in the perfect scenario would be to apply after shower and not sweat or shower for the 8 to 10 hours or more as they say in the insert it is absorbing 24 hours even though most, I think 80% is absorbed in a short period of time.

A dermatologist gave me some good advice for anything applied to your skin. Apply within 3 minutes after showering as the pores are open and you get max absorbtion. That goes for anything and you can tell there is a difference when you apply Andro whether you have showered or not. I could be wrong but I think sweating is almost as bad as showering when it comes to Androgel.

My Endo told me not to apply to shoulders, but to apply to inner thighs and inner biceps. It makes sence when you think about it.

I went on injections because I get out of work early and those days I work out I am sweating and then showering 6hrs after applying, which I think was causing me to have fluctuations. The injections 2x wk keep it stable.

And I’m sure Tnick knows about Andro, he just mentioned the patch.

Good luck
