I believe the reason is because PDs have to upload all the video to govt cloud servers (cant afford their own) where NSA/Feds can easily us it to (technically) illegally surveil people and communities… It hearkens back to the illegal FBI CointelPro operations against the black panthers in the 60s and 70s.
Screwed if you do, screwed if you dont kind of situation for cops… and most citizens. That said, i would wager a whole helluva lot of money that the large majority of BLM supporters support widespread use of bodycams on cops- the “official” BLM website isnt gospel to the BLM movement.
Yeah, I’ve said many times I think the lunatics are in the small minority. And since the minority are the lunatics, they are ones shouting the loudest and making headlines because that’s what lunatics do so it’s not a reflection of the general participants in the movement as a whole.
But that’s not what the GENERAL PUBLIC sees.
It’s unfortunate, but that’s the way it works unless some legit groups decide to up their PR skills.
The problem is there are also opportunists profiting off of this movement. It shouldn’t be surprising since this will happen to ANY movement, legit or otherwise.
Im not gonna search for them again, but ive seen a number of videos of “good shootings” where the officer fired into a car that was very obviously trying to just get away from the cops, and the reason the cop was in any danger from the car was because he/she put themself either infront of the car, or tried to reach into the car to grab the keys out of the ignition. To me, this kind of thing is an example of prioritizing “catching the bad guys” over “protecting the public”.
They’ll support them until it shows that 99% of the lies; i.e… Hands up don’t shoot, are coming from suspects and lying witnesses. Then they’ll cry racism. It’s already happened.
I know at least a few local jurisdictions have laws about how and why government agencies can gather/conduct surveillance. There was an issue with this in San Francisco a while back i vaguely remember.
But, is mass surveillance like what Britain has with CCTV everywhere actually legal? Like, if the Feds decided to put a couple cameras on EVERY SINGLE street light/sign in the country for the direct purpose of “homeland security” would that be legal?
What’s wrong with body cams? In theory they should serve as an anti-corruption measure and/or a measure to back LEO’s if lethal force is appropriately applied.
If you shoot a suspect who was charging at you and bodycam footage consists of a perpetrator running at you with a knife the evidence is irrefutable.
They too often show idiots acting like idiots, and Police not acting the way other idiots have been told they act. Doesn’t help business if you’re an anti-Police race-baiter.
