I’m thinking about trying the anabolic diet, but I’m a little confused as to the workout nutrition side of things. Now, I eat a load of carbs before a workout, times I’ve tried to do it without my carbs have meant a fairly pathetic workout, and I usually have about 30g in my shake after.
I realise that after the “metabolic shift” my energy levels in the gym’lll be fine, even without the carbs, but what I’m confused about is won’t having no carbs AFTER my workout short change my recovery/muscle building? I always thought carbs after a workout were essential…
Thanks in advance
Bob
thanks for the link, I had a read and it was very interesting.
Does this mean then that carb cycling is a better approach than the anabolic diet? I’ve never tried to lose fat before so I’m trying to work out the best way to do it.
The recommended approach in that article IMHO is better for fat loss than simply using a “strict” anabolic diet.
The Anabolic Diet does not require pre or post workout carbs due to the body been fully fat adapted…The addition of carbs would depend on the individual AND there would be NO carb ups required.
I recently did a trail run with pre/during workout carbs and less fats…I kinda felt a bit fuzzy on a daily basis…even during workouts(Carbs/Insulin increasing serotonine and reducing cortisol) SO I switched back to paleo/anabolic diet eating with much more fats(500kcals) and minimal carbs and my energy AND strength went through the roof…weight was also down 5lbs which would have been some water and glycogen but bodycomp measurement yielded fat loss as well.
I am not saying that everone should do what I am doing rather some individuals may respond much better to a high fat/pro diet with carbs ups every so often whilst others would respond much better to carbs ESPECIALLY around workout time if more insulin sensitive.

so if I did have post-workout carbs, I ouldn’t have weekend carb ups?
I think I’d probably prefer to have the weekend carb ups. If the post workout carbs aren’t necessary then that’s fine, plus I like the sound of being able to eat what I like at the weekend.

What’s “necessary” is highly individual and the only way you’ll ever find what works best for you is to experiment.
I’m in the camp that once believed the Anabolic Diet was the way to go, but know realizes that higher carb consumption is better for performance and muscle gains.

Agreed that it is highly individual. Higher carb consumption will be dependant on how fat or not and how insulin sensitive you are or not. You could still have some carbs around your workouts whilst keeping the carb up…but again, very individual. Try it out and if you find you are putting on too much fat, then change.
