An Uncommon Pursuit

I got accused of steroid use last bench day due to my super-heeyooj ginormous 225 bench by a bunch of teeners.

“He can only do that weight cuz he’s doing 'roids. Look at 'im.”

They were all working the lat and arm pump circuit. Didn’t see a weight in excess of 35 lbs being used. Big lat pull downs of 80 lbs. No sets less than 15 reps.

Fortunately, they know everything, so I think I can pick up some good tips by more eavesdropping.

Darn, makes me glad I’m far away from my old gym and at the new place

You guys and your dam fancy youtube…I want to know what the missing link is, I love posterior work. Oh no, what have I said…

Still going strong Skid. I especially like your light/de-loading bench routine that would probably make me puke on myself!

Speaking of young people in the gym, I had a guy guess that I was “about 190 or so” because of my pull-ups…? He was unhappy to learn that I weigh in at 173, as of that morning. He said he was “around 170 or so”. If some punk ever dropped the steroid bomb on me? He’d wake up with a needle up his arse. Just saying.

I just though it was funny, because I’m freakin’ skinny and on the near side of weak.

@ 5’10" and 173 you should be passing me in the strength department pretty soon, if I don’t gain weight to keep ahead of ya.

My lower back is STILL wrecked from last Saturday’s deadlifting. I definitely gotta cut back to singles for maxes and speed sets. Or just take a break from it altogether and let my back recover. Good excuse to do zerchers and GMs which I’ve been missing. Or high pulls, which I’d like to see what I can get for three.

No unsupported back work today, for sure…

Assistance Day

1-Arm DB Rows
80x8
100x8
115x8
130 2x7 (PR Reps + 2)

Chest Supported Incline BB Row
155x15,13

Shoulder Circuit
Seated DB Presses (55’s)+ Face Pulls (80) + Side Laterals (20’s)
Round 1: 18, 15, 15
Round 2: 13, 15, 10
Round 3: 12, 12, 12

Machine Curls (testing)
120 x 6 + an infinitely long negative. Stupid machine

EZ bar curls
70x5
90x2x5
110 2x3

Shrugs (straps)
365 2x8
405 1x8 (PR Reps looks like I went too light on the first two sets)
225x13

Good day. Hate the curl machine. I could have literally held the negative until closing time. Big time cheater machine.

Shrugs were good. Move all sets to 405 unless “my pore ole body gets all stove up.”

Did NOT want to do last round of the shoulder circuit.

edit:
Forgot -
Pullups
BWx5 10sec rest
BWx5 10sec rest
BWx4 time to leave…

Just to be clear, your 6’ 180 lbs…and based on your lifts, pretty dam stong I’d say. So, I’m thinking that you must actually “look” like you lift? The ignorance of youth is confusing. Are you training in pajamas that don’t show your obvious lean muscle mass? Maybe it’s just that dam MTV? Kids today, I don’t know.

Actually - I don’t look at all remarkable in street clothes except that I have good posture and am startlingly handsome. You just have to ignore that one crazy eye…

I think it’s more the contrast of what they were lifting and what I was lifting and our differing training methods.

The rep scheme they were using is not conducive to gaining strength. Therefore, my piddling poundages (I call them piddling because I know some strong dudes) must look like anabolic-enhanced tonnage to them since I am NOT big at all. It’s both a misunderstanding of what steroids can/can’t do and what are effective training methods.

The weights I push or much more (I suck at squatting) can be reached by anybody with 2 years of solid training under their belt. Any of those kids could be stronger than me in very short order, if they trained for strength rather than a pump.

But nobody’s asking for my opinion there…

edit: I don’t mean to imply I’m an expert - most definitely not. Still learning how to do this myself, but pumping, I’m pretty sure, is not the way to go, unless rehabbing or recovering. In my opinion anyway.

“I thought you were dead…”

From www.netfunny.com

An Indian walks into a cafe with a shotgun in one hand pulling a male
buffalo with the other. He says to the waiter, ‘Want coffee.’

The waiter says, ‘Sure, Chief. Coming right up.’

He gets the Indian a tall mug of coffee. The Indian drinks the coffee
down in one gulp, turns and blasts the buffalo with the shotgun,
causing parts of the animal to splatter everywhere and then just walks
out.

The next morning the Indian returns. He has his shotgun in one hand,
pulling another male buffalo with the other. He walks up to the
counter and says to the waiter, ‘Want coffee.’

The waiter says ‘Whoa, Tonto! We’re still cleaning up your mess from
yesterday. What was all that about, anyway?’

The Indian smiles and proudly says, ‘Training for position in United
States Congress: Come in, drink coffee, shoot the bull, leave mess for
others to clean up, disappear for rest of day.’

46 today.

Feel as good as 26. In fact - the only difference between now and then is that I make more complicated mistakes now…

But then, I have more opportunity to do so now than I did then.

Here’s to ungraceful aging!

Happy b’day Skid!

Thanks soldog!

Back feels good today - looks like the shrugs from last night actually helped rather than hurt.

Looking forward to benching tomorrow. I think the results will be better than the last bench session… I’m going to try the 1-board foam presses for 3x3 or max 3 and then do 5x5 full range. Rolling triceps extensions since I haven’t done 'em for a while. Need 5-6 reps at 55 lbs on that for a PR.

Happy birthday Henny Youngman.

“Now, take my wife…please!”

Can’t play a fiddle, though.

Thanks, hel320.

Celebrate in style Mr.Skid. That Kurt Russell pic was good work, thought of it right away. As far as the kids go? I certainly agree, different ways and thoughts about everything, especially in the gym.
I still blame the MTV.

And by the way, it I can lift your numbers at 46…I’d be a happy man. God speed.

Happy birthday a bit late Skid. I wish I could come up with something snappy to earn a Ba dum dum of my own.
