Ammonia Smell in Anabolic Diet

Whenever I train I start to smell like ammonia after about 20 minutes. I eat lots of veggies (more than 2 pound) and drink about 3 litres of water a day. Total carb intake is 50 gram and mostly from the veggies and soms nuts.
What can I do about it without compromising the diet?
Should I take some maltodextrine pre workout?

DO you eat protein like meat and shit. Ammonia is the burning of muscle for fuel, i know i used to smell that all the time while i was training at ft benning.

off the dome I eat this:

meal 1:
40 gr whey hydrolisaat
100 gr almonds
half cucumber

meal 2:
4 eggs
70 gr bacon
other half of the cucumber

meal 3:
200 gr tuna
30 gr olive oil
a little mayonaise
2 big tomatos

meal 4:
200 gram steak
200 gram brocoli
200 gram mushrooms
50 gram butter

meal 5:
the tuna again

meal 6:
the eggs with bacon again

about 350 gram protein, 350 gram fat and 50 gram carbs

First of all: Do you know the difference between ammonia and acetone?

Second of all: Search. There is a thread called something like “low carb and ammonia smell” (turned out to be mostly acetone, but some ammonia cases) and there’s another one here:

in which a guy got rid of his ammonia smell by supplementing with citrulline (very simply put: ammonia scavenger).

Hop I was of help!

Carbs are protein sparing, so eat more of them.

Thanks for your reply. Ive found threat.

Im not sure how to put this, but I dont have the scent in my nose cause anyone could smell it. It’s a very salty pissy smell, somewhat cheesy :stuck_out_tongue:

My liver and kidneys seem to be fine according to blood test though

I’ve added 20 grams of maltodextrine before my training and it took a little bit longer for the smell to appear, but after a while it was there again :frowning:

So add more until you stop getting that smell when you work out?

Just spitballin here…

Sounds like ammonia.

You could try to supplement with some citrulline or arginine. (Note that I don’t give a fuck about the NO hype, I just want you to turn ammonia into urea quicker. Citrulline or arginine could help with that. If you’re interested in the chemistry, look up the urea cycle.)

The point of malto would be that if you break down glucose for energy instead of aa:s, less ammonia would be produced. Maybe more malto could help as well, but I don’t know how strictly you want to follow your diet. The above paragraph should help though.

I’d be happy if you let me know how it works as well. Good luck!

Im not sure if that will solve the problem. I’m thinking for a bit and I remember I smelled bad when I was on a high carb diet too. Not as much as I do know, but still very stinking.
I’m gonna buy some L-citrulline next week to see if it’s an ammonia problem as L-citrulline removes ammonia from the body. Maybe I have a built up.

take a shower

I will, but unfortunally I need to wait a week and then I’ll get paid again.
After that I will bump this threat again

OP, how long have you been training?

Things that have increased the ammonia smell for me:

  1. being a noob new to training
  2. low carbs
  3. long workouts

I’ve been training for about 5 years and my training sessions are about 60 minutes

I saw Citrulline Malate is a lot cheaper and also turns ammonia into urea, so Im gonna get me a jar right now!

Citrulline malate (as much as ~10g/day in divided doses) was not nearly as effective as pure L-citrulline (2g x2/day) at reducing my ammonia body odor.

It does take approximately twice the dosage of citrulline malate to deliver the same amount of citrulline as when dosing citrulline itself, due to only about half the weight of citrulline malate being the citrulline.

So definitely don’t compare cost on an equal gram basis where the purpose is only to deliver citrulline.

Hmm, didnt know that. How about I take 5 gr of the malate in the morning and 5 gram pre-workout till its empty?

The malate seemed to do its work!
I took 2gram in the morning, 2 in the afternoon, 2 preworkout, 2 during workout en 2 postworkout and my shirt smells like I could ware it again today LOL (won’t do that ofcourse).

Great! I think the real magic comes from taking it before and during the workout. And the citrulline did it’s job

indeed! I’m still taking it now to get rid of the built up (if any), cause I tent to smell bad sooner since about a year or so.
