Amino Acids on an Empty Stomach

Exactly how long is it necessary to wait after eating, before taking Aminos? In another forum, someone complained that they couldn’t find a time when their stomach was empty, to fit in their aminos. I told the guy the minimum amount of time to wait was about 45 minutes, because it takes about 20-40 minutes for gastric emptying. (I also said an hour and a half would be better).Then somebody jumped on me and said that it is not just about having an empty stomach. I know that, but what is the minimum amount of time you would suggest? Is it better to skip a dose than to take aminos with some food in your system? Exactly where in the GI tract do aminos enter the bloodstream? Any other comments regarding aminos in relation to meals?

Why are you taking amino’s? If it’s for protein, it’s a very inefficient way to get protein in your system. Some use to take amino’s post exercise for recovery but that advice is very dated and a product like Surge is far superior to plain aminos for post WO recovery. Amino’s are fairly worthless for what you get unless using strictly glutamine/BCAA in which case should be used pre/post WO. Other times have questionable benefit at best. Just use Surge. Much more cost effective and research backed.

It’s not for increasing protein intake. I already know I can just eat a bunch of food to get more protein.

Certain amino acids, when isolated, have specific effects on the body. For example Tryptophan has been used as a sleep aid (it relaxes you) while Tyrosine makes you more alert. Lysine is good for herpes outbreaks. By isolating amino acids, certain physiological effects are triggered, (I believe by causing hormonal cascades. How DO they work, anyway?)

Please, someone who understands amino acids must be able to answer the questions in the original post…

Dr Michael Colgan was big on feeding athletes aminos for GH release and stuff. He reccommended at LEAST 2 hours. if its any use, either Bill Roberts or Brock says that if you have to take aminos on an empty stomach to get an effect, don’t bother with them, eat instead, it’ll build more muscle.

I understand what you’re saying about individual amino’s but you made it sound like you were taking a common multy amino tablet. What individuals aminos were you taking and for what effects? Gastric emptying depends on many factors such as macro-nutrient ratios (high fat meal will take much longer than carb meal - steak will take longer than whey shake etc etc) and also how big a meal was consumed and also how often you eat. In other word, if you eat every three hours, that will slow gastric emptying and a big meal will take longer than a small meal or snack or shake and a high fat meal will take considerably longer. In general, for me, a whey shake on empty stomach takes an hour to completely digest but a protein\fat “meal” takes at least 2-3 hours and that would be closer to 3 hours if truely a meal sized meal.

If you really want to take on an empty stomach, take 1st thing in morn.

If you want to do more than 1 dose a day, take 1st right away in morn, than take other dose 30 min before which ever meal occurs after longest break without food and last dose right before bed.
