American Diet Dogma

Before a recent article (Mercader J. Mozambican “grass seed consumption during the middle stone age”. Science 2009;326:1680-83) that has pushed possible consumption to 100,000 years the first evidence we have of regular seed harvesting and consumption by any group of humans is from Ohalo II in Israel, about 19,400 years ago. Their research says it took over 8,000 more years before deliberate agriculture was practiced anywhere, and many more thousands of years before it spread beyond a small region of the Middle East.

One of those research articles goes back 30,000 years and is mostly comprised around the basis that a form of primitive pestle was found to have some starchy carbs associated with it, mostly in the form of ferns and cattails. Other researchers have said this could be attributed to drought/starvation and was not widely practiced. The article speaks of findings in different climate regions, yet they are all in Europe. Signs of long distance trade have been seen as long as 150,000 years ago, so I think that could also a possibility.

Basically from what we see from these discussions is the only way to get a definitive answer would be to create a time machine and go back and see for ourselves.

The other article has an abstract about going back 100,000 years but no way to read the research.

Honkey-

That is not an ignorant comment at all. From what I have read plant materials could have been used for medicines or laxatives. There is no written evidence of this because we are talking about prehistoric times. Most research has been done primarily through the study of human remains.

It’s funny, I have never seen a “hot” dietician. Maybe they are just after they graduate college, when they’re still young and healthy despite their diets. Of the ones I’ve met, one was overweight, one anorexic, and one is just kinda rough looking-with dry skin and hair-maybe a low fat diet??
One of them gave a lecture at my gym on proper nutrition for triathlon training. She brought a bunch of books for the class to look over, one of them being Joe Friel’s book on triathlon training. He’s a huge advocate of paleo and co-wrote another book with Cordain. I asked her about the paleo diet for training. She gave me a dumb look, “what’s that?” So I said that it was in this book you brought to class, in the chapter regarding diet for triathlon training.

hahaha that is classic! This girl was actually attractive, but technically, she was still an intern of some sort, so the grains still have time to ruin her.

We need a pic of a hot woman. Now this thread is legit.

Haha an overweight dietician. Her diet concepts must be working wonders for clients. Nothing but soy protein and and that “enriched” white bread for her. It says enriched so it must be good right?

Awesome

chatting up cute blonde about a topic of mutual interest
not realizing you’re somehow attracting her with this super douchey spiel.
not picking up on her shit test
not calling her out on the interruption
not topsy-turvying the discussion
not confident enough to do anything but feel appreciative that a cute girl is talking to you
not getting a bj in the bathroom
not getting her number to “pick her brain” down the road instead
not collecting the stray hairs that fell off her head onto the seat after she left
not looking like you lift in a T-shirt to show her the results of your manifesto
masturbating to what might have been later that night
post cool story (bro) on T-Nation
getting a reality check about being a beta male

Sounds about right.

And that’s what makes the discussion interesting!

Not sure if this link will work as I get university access to these journals but here is the full Mozambican grass seed article:

With regard to my own dietary views I tend to find that high protein and higher carb/lower fat works for me. I do engage in a fair amount of endurance related activity though. I don’t have many completely ‘off’ days but when I do, carbs are decreased and fats increase but I still keep a decent amount of carbs in. Generally they come from oats, potatoes and rice but this is mainly down to preference.
The main exception being a chocolate bar pre-workout, as mentioned by BushidoBadBoy, this seems to have had noticable effect.

hahahaha

Thanks roon. Still requires me to sign in. But now I have the title and authors so I should get access to them from the university I work at. Appreciate it.

In regards to youre dietary views you say it perfectly “what works for you”. We are all different. What works for me is carbs coming from mainly sweet potatoes and rice.

This pretty much sums up my whole life as a dietitian. Constantly hearing this type of stuff/arguments from co-workers regarding my low carb high fat diet. I eventually gave up trying to discuss nutrition topics unrelated to clinical nutrition with them as they are almost always unwilling to change the way they think. The sad part is its mainly because the education we receive is essentially through the eye of the beholder (nutrition professor) and they just regurgitate what they tell them and most SIGNIFICANTLY lack a fundamental understanding of nutritional physiology.
Well said. Hopefully today’s youth with access to so much information will be able to push through the dogma presented previously thru misinterpreted studies. It really is sad because nobody is doing this intentionally, people just don’t know. Because it is in an old text book, people think it must be 100% correct. Well history suggests we don’t know shit!

a famous philosoher once said “all i know is that i know nothing”. I take everything with a grain of salt and do the best i can.

As a dietitian maybe you can answer this. Once you get your degree or cert or whatever you get (not to belittle your job as I would LOVE to be in your shoes), are you required to continue your studies? Doctors who are in their 40’s and 50’s would have learned outdated information.
Technically we are required to maintain a certain level of “continuing education credits” (15 credits a year) in the form of seminars, webinars, conferences, etc, but we are not require to re-take a national exam such as other health care professionals must.

The content of said continuing education in no way has to pertain to your area of expertise though. I can get all my credits in the form of Diabetes Research, even though that isn’t my main patient population. So there is quite a bit of freedom regarding what continuing ed you get, which can be a good and a bad thing.

From my experience to really be a good practitioner (dietitan) one must stay on top of nutritional trends through self education via reliable sources. A lot of what our governing body (the ADA, recently changed to AND (Academy of nutrition and dietetics) offers as resources and continuing ed is a little behind the times.

Watch out we have a cool guy on our hands. Tool. Go bang your head against a wall “Alpha” male.

What are you doing other than trolling the thread?

I have always been curious about this chocolate bar idea. Glad to hear it’s noticeably helping you. What kinda bar are you eating?

Cool story bro.

Ndiddy, I like your stance on the continuing education and keeping up with current research. Do you know if there are high intances of some people just doing easy continuing ed? I know there has been an instance where people do that for continuing CSCS education.

What are you doing other than getting a support group together for being made to feel inadequate by a cute dietitian?

There was no question in your post. Therefore, I am free to comment as I please about the information presented.

Does it hurt because it is insulting, or does it hurt because now you’re thinking there might be some truth in there past the hyperbole? Seriously, how many time did you “went (sic) on” to some other insipid topic while she actually sat there any continued to pay attention?

It’s not “trolling”. It’s my honest opinion without the social-sterilization required to keep it from stinging a little.

good piece! ya it seems as if the cro-magnon was the more dominant species, however just like other species, they likely mated. An example of this would be Anonym, he likely has more neanderthal DNA than Cro-Magnon. Hence him being a dick for no particular reason, lacking respect for a fellow t member.

bahahaha I crack myself up. I’m going to the store to make cauliflower pizza for Walking Dead.

Well, it sure as shit is based on a true story, I can promise you that much.

Yah good article eightohfive. Do you know of any other research on the subject? The only problem I have with that one is they even state that coincidence cannot be completely ruled out?

Had cauliflower crust pizza the other night. Awesome stuff. Love chris’s recipes!
