Hi, I am curious what you guys think about a couple of foods. Just some basic opinions on overall nutritional value. First off let me say that my main goal right now and through winter is to gain weight by adding mainly muscle. I try to keep my caloric intake high and eat lots of good food and I work out five days a week. I need to know about a couple though.
honey. I use this in a shake in the morning as a sweetener.
oat meal, not instant, just plain oatmeal. This is also in one of my morning shakes.
granola bars, nature’s valley. I know this one is questionable but is it horrible?
I think there are many knowledgeable people here and lots of great articles so any help is greatly appreciated.
Everything looks good sans the granola bars. The more natural (less processed-think “boxed”), the food is the better. Bars can be good on the go, but your can make your own protein bars using a variety of things-are few would be protein powders, oats, honey, splenda, Natural Nut butters, etc.-Another good thing in your case is that the kcals can really add up when done that way.

Thanks for the response. Does anyone know some good recipes for protein bars???
Hey,
I have to credit youngguns516 for sending me this recipe, so I’ll do a good turn and pass it on:
4 cups whole grain oatmeal.
1/2 to 3/4 cup NATURAL peanut butter, or REDUCED FAT peanut butter
Approx. 1 cup egg whites (I used the liquid egg whites that are pasturised to avoid the samonella possibilities in raw eggs!)
.75 cups nonfat low sugar skim milk.
7 scoops protein powder.
5 packets or so of splenda if you want, i dont use this, but it will help if you have a sweet tooth.
Large dash of cinnamon
Mix all that up very very very well in a bowl, and spread evenly in a baking pan. Make sure you spray some cooking spray in there before you add the batter. Then you put the pan in the fridge for 12 hours, an there you have it.
Gives 8 protein bars with low carbs that are slow digesting and low sugar, gives you healthy fats and pretty low saturated fat, and about 25g protein per bar.
also check out this website, there’s lots of ideas on there:

Thanks. Do all protein powder flavors work well in these types of recipes? I have chocolate on hand, should do fine right???
Yeah I think chocs one of the best, vanilla powder doesn’t really taste of much and personally I’m not a big fan of strawberry, but I guess experimentation is the way to go once you’ve got the method sorted.
