Always Come Out Swinging

sweet home gym.

and deadlifting without a shirt; you just made nommm class. congrats.

Can’t believe the meet is a mere 10 days away now. The last 14 weeks have been the most committed I’ve ever been to a program. I didn’t miss any of my workouts and just failed less than a handful of attempts. Now it’s all about getting things done on the platform. My goal has been to use this as my first full meet to get a total but I’d really like to hit a deadlift PR. We’ll see if the deadlift Gods are with me or against me on this one.

Before I do another meet I’m going to do Tough Mudder in April. I need some conditioning work and training for tough mudder will keep my ass in gear. After that I’m back to 5/3/1 and the next obsession.

I was just wondering where you’ve been.

Tough mudder sounds GREAT! I’ve been wanting to do one for ages, maybe this should just be the year.

10 days, EEEEEE!!!

Hi, Hara. Cool on the Tough Mudder. Just read at work today about a partnership between us and TM designating our EAS Sports Nutrition as the “official protein recovery beverage provider” for the 2012 TM events. So now we’re seeing more promos not just for Tough Mudder but stuff encouraging folks to get into some sort of conditioning program in general. Best of luck to you in April!

Hara, that was an awsome vid man. Talk about deep on the squats…
Your deads looked strong as hell. I believe you’re gonna rip up the whole meet! I’d wish you luck, but something tells me you won’t need any…

Hi HARA

Great form and seriously fantastic lifting music. Is that playing over the vid or are you listening to it while lifting.

Summoning the deadlift gods indeed! 0_0

@ Charlie I listen to that particular piece whenever I pull but it’s laid over the videos well
@ kbgal. That’s really cool. It looks like a fun event
@ Cholula sign up girl!!

thanks for sharing the video- nice pulling.

tough mudder sounds like a great challenge to train for

Some nice lifting in the vids . . . you do look good. Don’t feel bad about not hitting maxes in the gym . . . a number of people only hit max weight at meets.

A fine tuned machine brother…you are primed and ready to go!

Just finished last workout of this competition cycle…warmed up, worked up to a 315 squat, 225 bench, and 365 pull. All felt as light as they should have. Just stretching and resting till meet day on Sunday. Should be a good meet, there are currently 73 lifters registered.

Quite frankly, I’m anxious to get a legit total so I can start training for my next meet in May. Prepping for this meet help me overcome a tough hamstring injury, so I already feel way ahead of the game regardless of what I total this weekend against the young lions.

Who knows…I may maul a few along the way.

it’s maulin time.

good luck!

looks like you are all set
tear shit up

Good luck!

I’m going to start off by saying I bombed out of my first full meet. Bombing out is the last thing I expected to happen today.

It did. I’m over it, and I’m looking forward to my next full meet on May 19th.

Here’s how it went…

1st Squat attempt 380lbs…easy weight for me.

RED LIGHTED for squatting before command is given. I was really anxious to get it done and totally forgot about waiting for command. Judges said I was deep enough but just didn’t wait for command.

2nd squat attempt 415lbs…mistake here was not retaking 380.

RED LIGHTED for depth. Yeah, the guy who prides himself on deep squats put in a high one when it really mattered. I was in shock and couldn’t believe I did a high 415.

3rd Squat attempt retake 415lbs…
RED LIGHTED for depth again. No excuses, my day was over as fast as it had begun.

I’ve read about and seen so many people bomb out but I never thought it would happen to me.

It’s been less than 4 hours and I’m over it. On the hour drive home, I thought about how surprised and happy my wife and 4 kids would be to see me home early and my failure at the meet was wiped clean. I’m lucky that way.

Matty and I are doing the May 19th meet together. The USAPL is super strict on depth so I’ll need to clean that up. Till then, below are my attempts. Try to learn from them…I know I’ll come out swinging again.

Time to retire this log as well. I’ll start another when I’ve got something to say worth reading. Over 35 is the best spot on T-Nation.

Well written, and thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts.

Really looking forward to watching you and Matty tag team the meet in May.
