I called it!

Those Hip Thrusts are impressive. Roman had me doing those at the end of a work out and although it looks like an easy movement, it ain’t.

Good work Girl!

Killing it as always. Push presses looked very good.

oh crap, now I know why Im so sore…I was going allll the way down to the floor with the hip thrusts, lol…oops.

G- you just want to be sure Im not getting too comfortable, huh?!!

Just got to keep you on your toes lol!!!

Cav - you did! Im not ready yet, but thought when Im working may be a good switch up.

I do really like the style of my training right now, fits my goals.

Dday ya think? love the challenge of that grip. Anxious to hear Mashys critique

Colin I know right! I have them close to last too, that top squeeze and hold is money! By money I mean
rock the bootie burn.

G I am I am!

MIM I dont know, the down is more of a deload, maybe its the long up gives you the nice burn? For me its the hold at the top and I go up on heels a little just to really make em worth it, or between 2 benches.

I havent been paying that close attention to my eats, wish I was cause i look kinda goood today. Tummy, legs - everything feels tight, scale 121,and Im staying in my 27s

Will hit up abz later, seems like I hit them when im sore all over so it wont be as torturous as usual.

Aww! Up! You’re so sweet. My lifts are mediocre at best, so I really appreciate your kind words! Means a lot to me

First off, I gotta say, you’re freaking strong! 80x4 is stout! Nice work, mama!

And honestly, your form is REALLY, REALLY good! So I really don’t see much to comment on. You bring your elbows up, you have a nice dip, you lockout out the elbows when you get the bar overhead…Its great!

If anything I would just say be more explosive with the lift - like really, POW! you know?

So for me, I think elbows push up, knees dip and EXPLODE! In my head i imagine all my energy coming from my core and exploding both upward and downward - you can even jump a bit if that helps, even put on your Oly shoes! Try it with an empty bar and really exaggerate the movement, see how that feels. (we’ll make an Oly lifter out of you yet! hee hee)

Also, Lexy has a really nice push press form, I’ll try to find one of her vids and send it your way.

Awesome, AWESOME work, girl! Keep at it!

Aha! Here:

- YouTube!

Check out lexy’s first lifts when she does the PP. I think she does real solid work getting the elbows up before she explodes, as well as getting her head through her arms when she finishes.

Can’t wait to see how you progress!

Thanks for Pimpimping Lexi, I get it! I see what you mean about the explosiveness.

I guess I was just kinda doing a military, then saw the PP and the leg pump but wasnt thinking about what came next…I also thought the elbows had to be up like a clean…(yea I clipped my chin one of the first reps, lol) OK Ill tweak out some improvements. I think I got stronger envisioning the blue leggings or maybe the bubble in the blue leggings hehe

HAH! Yeah, i should prob tell her that i did that. Feels somewhat wrong of me…kinda naughty!

Anyways, you raise a really good question that I don’t think I can answer and maybe someone else can - is the Push Press its own lift? Is it just a modified Military Press? I don’t know.

Anyways, what Lex is working on in her lift is a push jerk, but what I wanted to show you is the kind of explosiveness she’s using, which I think is the ONLY thing you really need to add in there. Otherwise I wouldn’t tweak a thing if I were you!! I think you got it down  And yes, from what I understand, elbows in clean position. Seriously, I see absolutely nothing wrong with your push press! You rock it!

Yea I went down in Basement to try out said “explosiveness”, nothing too serious sense I had my cowboy boots on, anyway yea I needed the explosive but I noticed it takes away some load from the shoulders …and I am trying to keep the load on the shoulders. SO I will do them like you say (cause yea It needed that) and throw in some strict MP with no leg drive.

Also, you probably didnt notice in vid, I did put on my Oly shoes to see the difference(me likey)

Hm. That’s interesting! I don’t know anything about “loading the shoulders” actually. Now you’ll have to teach me - what do you mean by that? If its what i imagine, than I def think a strict MP might be better than a push press, no?

I do push presses because I like the movement of it, since I’m interesting in Oly. But follow those with some high rep DB OHPs so that i can get more beef on my shoulders, is that what you plan on doing?

LOL @ having your cowboy boots on btw!! Too funny! It always starts out like that. And then ends up with you thinking that squatting another human is a fun idea after you’ve had a few drinks. hah!

Ok, enough of me monopolizing your log! lol! Sawwwy!

Mashy you can take over anytime, I prefer the aggressive type.haha Yea the CB boots gave it a even newer twist.

Yea, I do love the Oly but it is one of those practice practice practice things, which I love but then my training was 4 ever and a day. I love the movement of the PP and it really warms me up if I dont keep getting heavier etc. I just watched your vid and was like oh… I had my arms regular, for a MP, so it was fun switching to what the PP is supposed to be, now the little explode I should be good. But yea, loading em up before bench them i do the presses and stuff to keep hitting them. Bottom line is the PP are more “fun” them the MPs both are important for different reasons.

Feel free to reply with a bikini on

aw, i’m flattered that masch thinks i have good form

i think one can lift most weight with the push-press compared to any variety of jerk (where one isn’t allowed to use ones arms at to press the weight out at all) or a strict press (where you aren’t allowed to use your legs to drive the bar up at all). not sure on the evolution of the lifts… the press used to be an oly lift (the strict press, i think) but then people started leaning backwards mightily and basically benching the bar up off themselves so they eliminated the press from oly lifting competition. the jerk component has always been there, i think… not sure where push-presses came from…

i’m not sure about shoulder growth, either… some people say your muscles grow better with the increased load (so little ‘cheats’ to enable you to lift more weight e.g., by using leg drive to help the shoulders out) is the way to go. other people say your muscles grow better with quality activation (so little ‘cheats’ to enable you to lift more weight e.g., by using leg drive to help the shoulders out) isn’t the way to go. i guess a combo is probably best. dumbbell work, too… dunno.

Well, you hottie, you! I’m loving all the pictures and video in here. Barbell hip thrusts are back in my rotation now, too. I’d forgotten how hard they are to lock out and hold at the top. Yikes!

Some great overhead lifting discussion going on in here. Alexus i am thinking the strict press maybe same as a military press idk. Military press maybe a name that is now extinct lol.
This has been my experience with the push press(meaning dip and drive with hips into a shoulder press, no double dip like a push jerk).
I’ve seen oly lifters use it as a warm-up and i have seen them use it for shoulder strength and also tri/lockout strength.
I’ve seen athletes use if to lean how to progress into a push jerk and eventually a split jerk, also for shoulder and/or tri strength and additionally use more dip and drive and less shoulders to develop hip power.
What i really like about the lift is that you can dial in a little more hip power to target explosiveness, move more weight and get some good lockout strength or back off hips a bit and get more shoulder load depending on why you are doing the lift? I also really like the push press behind head as it takes the technique of holding the weight in the front squat position away and you can focus on more dip and drive/press. Also my observation is as the lift gets heavy (non oly) lifters tend to shoot knees more forward and get out of position, it is much easier to stay upright and locked in with a heavier weight with the bar on the back. Db’s are also a nice variation to use on the push press.
Up started playing with the hang clean/push press quite a while ago and was just a warm-up. Last few weeks we have talked more about targeting the shoulders and the push press became something she dialed in on in the warm-up and now i think it will be a staple of her shoulder training? And as Lexus has mentioned we have the push press in one day to overload the shoulders and the seated press behind head in on another to make the movement much stricter. Just my 2 cent.

Thanks for the input, Lex and German! And thanks for hosting the discussion, Up

I’ll have to have a look at these behind the head presses, sound interesting!

Thanks for the vid!
Love your set up for a squat rack replacement.
My son <15>, can’t get to lifting gym much with his schedule and needs a way to set up for squats. I think I could figure out a way to clone your set up at home…

ps. congrats on raising your daughter to accept the realities of physical culture as opposed to the culturally dominate myths. I suppose it is a matter of her seeing your example for herself. I will show my daughter <11> this vid of lexy… Vids of other T-Nation ladies lifts has got her interested…

Thanks!
