All About Houston

I live just north of Humble as well. Housing is much better here than other large cities, but Houston is very spread out, so get ready for long commute times. Getting used to losing 2 hours a day commuting took a while for me. I use the park and ride, which is a great option for those that work downtown, otherwise you are going to be putting some miles on your car here. I concur with both the positives and negatives already mentioned here, it is hot here, but winters are great. Year round outdoor activities is a plus imo.

On average, probably. But it’s bimodal.

Being blunt, Hispanics are fat and Texas has a lot of Hispanics.

Reasons are (and I say this as a Native American who avoids grain products to a reasonable degree even though I am lean) is Mexicans are largely genetically Native American and thus extremely prone to diabetes, carb intolerance, etc.

Comes from being hunter gatherers until 4-5 generations ago.

I remember TC on this site writing an article about Colorado (or whereever he was) being listed as “fat” and him being baffled by it because there were all these lean people around him.

Well, it’s bimodal. White folk are leaner than hispanics. Colorado has a goodly population of hispanics and natives. We get fat if we are not very careful.

Houston is much the same.

Be more specific.

As in Texas City/Pasadena = shittiest industrial area in the universe — seemingly regular explosions of refinereies and chemical plants. 50 years ago they had a barge blow up with the blast measured in the kilotons — knocked major parts of the town down.

Or Sugarland = typical suburb.

Regardless, it’s wet, hot, wet, hot, and hotter and wetter. Those are the seasons.

Inside the loop, excepting River Oak, Rice Village, etc, it’s pretty spotty. Some good neighborhoods, but you need to know where they are.

Houston has more strippers and strip clubs per capita than any city in the USA. I think all the good looking girls one normally sees in bars are stripping somewhere.

Thanks you can say that my friend, us crackers cant.

LOL @ culture shock being a reason someone would want to move away from the city.

There are too many cultures here for “culture shock”. None of them overtake the rest.

That’s called “prejudice”. Just wanted to help with the terminology.

Agree with just about everything but stripclubs. Portland, Oregon has by far more strip clubs per capita than any city in the country. But, Houston (Texas in general) has the best looking women of anywhere in the country. Legitimate 8’s work the register at target here.

Legitimate -4’s work the Walmarts.

Have you ever been to Los Angeles?

LA doesn’t have shit on Houston in any conceivable way. LA is the armpit of America.

Surprised this hasn’t been brought up yet, but Yahoo recently had Ann article that Houston is the #1 city to live in in the country.

WF nobody is going to post that. Silly.

For the record I always used to talk shit about Houston, would tell my wife (who is from here) that I would rather shave my back with a cheese grater than move to Houston. However after being here for the past three years, I really do love the place. Plan on living here for many, many more years to come.

Where you from? I don’t necessarily agree with that article, but every time I’ve left I’ve always wound up coming back.

Originally from Tennessee but spent the previous 25 years in Corpus before moving here

Whatever area Hobby Airport is in sucks.

I was filling up my rental car and got a red slurpee thrown own me by some black kids in a crappy car screaming “Joooooooooooo.” Ruined my clothes and made me look like a serial killer going through airport security.

Probably not the best thing to judge a town by, but made me hate the whole town.

Corpus has the best deep sea fishing in the world, IMHO.

And I’ve fished most all over the world.

Sorry man that is not a great part of town. International has a better group of people around it, Hobby is rough for sure.

Corpus may have great fishing but the town blows, as far as city planners and culture there.

Having a big ass because you are 50 lbs overweight does not count.

Cost of living is great. I’m living in a 600 square foot apartment for $650 a month. It certainly isn’t luxury, but this place would be in the $1,000 range in any other big city. Cost of gas is lower than the rest of the country, probably because we make it here.

[/quote}

This is probably true with the exception of the north dallas area. Gas is consistently 20-30 cents cheaper and the older suburbs(richardson/plano) have cheaper good apartments.
