All About Houston

I know there’s a ton of Houstonites (Houstoners?) in these forums.

Tell me all about Houston and ‘greater Houston’. Good, Bad, Ugly.

I may be visiting west/southwest of Houston and possibly an extended stay. What’s housing like? Entertainment? Of course, gyms. Music scene?

Derek542 has given some pretty good info in the past.

Thx.

ask HoustonGuy

OP i thought you quit T-Nation and moved to brokeback mountain with mauradermeat?

Houstonians. Where exactly do you mean by southwest? I’m in the museum/medical district which is pretty much in the middle of everything, andI was born and raised here so hopefully could help you out.

Housing here is cheaper than most places. I have heard the $420 a month apartment I rented across from the Reliant center when I was in school would go for about 1500-2000 or more in places like Miami, New York.

Other than that, there are too many cultures in Houston for someone to pick out what you want to know specifically. If you are into it, there is someone else here into it too.

I’m seeing a few long term opportunities that would fall west of center of town like in the direction of Sugar Land and Katy. Derek542 mentioned that down toward Galveston is pretty nice.

Any school info? I’ve never really looked too much into Houston area so I’m just really starting to research it.

You mean that one CargoGuy?

In case you have never been anywhere but Maine you will find 3 new experiences
1 - Probably the worst traffic in the US except for LA
2 - Humidity that added to temperature can exceed 140 all year and 180 during the 6 months(lol)of summer
3 - A massive diversity of ethnicities, wouldn’t say melting pot just diversity

And other than Clear Lake area, I wouldn’t say it is that nice towards Galveston.

Schools - 3 main ones U of H - big time commuter with good rep in business and engineering, Rice - Harvard/Stanford rep with prices to match, Texas Southern - primarily black enrollment no idea on rep

I’ve lived my whole life in Houston. In particular on the west side. What I like about Houston is that if I want big city stuff I can drive in to town, but if I want some quiet and calm I can head to the Katy and Cypress areas. Schools have already been mentioned, and so has the weather, but the weather deserves another mention. It is absolutely brutal in the summers, especially if you aren’t used to it.

We all know 100 is hot, but put 98 percent humidity on top of it and words fail to describe what it feels like. Large African American population, VERY large Vietnamese population, VERY VERY large Hispanic population. Has big city amenities but still has southern hospitality (if a woman has a flat tire, someone will stop and help). If you like food you are coming to the right spot. Great Asian food and, of course, great BBQ. Tex-Mex and authentic Mexican food are better than anywhere else I’ve had.

Cost of living is great. I’m living in a 600 square foot apartment for $650 a month. It certainly isn’t luxury, but this place would be in the $1,000 range in any other big city. Cost of gas is lower than the rest of the country, probably because we make it here. And, as of the typing of this post, we have the number 1 team in the NFL.

What else?

The musuems are great too. The butterfly exhibit and the paleontology exhibit are amazing. Especially the paleontology one. Check it out if in you’re in the area.

I live in very North east Houston. Just North of Humble. It can take over an hour to get from one side of the city to the other.

On that note, don’t plan on getting from place to place on a bikecycle like what I’ve heard you can do in NY city. You need a car.

Moved here for a job. Complete culture shock.
Too humid.
Crappy baseball and basketball team.
Too much religion
Got relocated to Cincinnati, which sucks, but is LA compared to Houston.
the best view of Houston was the rear view mirror.

LOL Good stuff - thx.

Sweaty, port city, no zoning.

If you’re in Sugarland there’s no real reason to come into Houston proper, other than to break the monotony. This brings up something important: you’re gonna be floored by just how big this city is. For reference, Seattle is one of the top 10 biggest cities in the country and is about 75 sq miles. When counting all of the unincorporated areas (Sugarland, Woodlands, Katy, etc…) Houston is over 800 sq miles. This city is crazy big.

Hahahaahahahahahahahahahahahaahaha

To many Non-Whites I guess

Who the fuck watches baseball and basketball any more?

Wow to much religion? Where the fuck did you attempt to live.

Glad you are gone

I believe Houston is one of the most obese cities in the world too.

There’s probably a ridiculous amount of competition for any girl who isn’t 100lb overweight

No that would be San Antonio,

I heard Canada had nothing but snow and beavers it was on the internet so it must be true?

It was at one point I saw it a while ago.

This 2003 article states it was the fattest city in the US.

http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/health/2003-01-01-cities-usat_x.htm

So things have either gotten better… or worse elsewhere.

San Antonio is where its at.

Plus Houston is huge man, that is not taking in account Houston proper. Where I live I see tons of people on Bicycles, running and there are ton of gyms every where.

And again how they do those “studies” is pretty fucked up if you look into it.

Houston has great people, but lousy weather. It felt like everyone was armed, but that could be at the state level.

Saying that San Antonio is fatter than Houston isn’t saying much. The fattest city on the planet is fatter than the 3rd fattest city. I blame the restaurant culture (great food), long commutes, and insane difficulty of exercising outside. IMO, downtown is full of tunnels so that people don’t roast while walking between buildings.

Cincy feels way more religious than Houston. Cincy is full of conservative Germans. Remember, this is the same city that almost banned Maplethorpe, and instead settled on ID-ing patrons before they went into the art museum.

I’d live in Houston over Cincy any day, but maybe it’s because I like Texans a lot more than Buckeyes. Enjoy your winter.
