LOL!
From cracked.com-
Letâ??s examine the famous Hubble Ultra Deep Field image, the most massive photo ever taken:
Right now, on your computer screen, are approximately 10,000 galaxies.
Each of those galaxies contains anywhere from ten million to one trillion stars.
The average star is roughly a million times the size of Earth.
And yet, with all that junk, the Universe is more than 90 percent empty space.
All of that, in this tiny photo. A photo that took 400 orbits and 800 exposures to take.
And the kicker? The photo covers one thirteen-millionth of the entire night sky.
So all that shit we just said about how big the universe is (at least 90 billion light years)? Forget it. Thatâ??s small beans. The Cosmological Horizon is here to make your day a whole lot more complicated. Since we can only observe stellar bodies that have had some effect on us (usually bombarding us with light), there is an outer limit to what we can see of the universe. Hence, the â??observable universe.â?? What about the rest? The parts of the universe beyond our Starcraft-style fog of war? Well, according to some math we have no interest in going into, the size of the â??actualâ?? universe is so large that if the universe we just described (the impossibly, mind-bogglingly large one) were the size of a quarter, the actual universe would be the size of the Earth.
Not the best source I agree, but I think the point still stands. The universe is fucking big. Really to not believe there is at least one other thing out there in all of that is stupid. We always say life needs water to survive. Well maybe that’s just in our galaxy. What if something place has 02H and they call it retaw? I think its silly to try and conform everything to what we see. We’ve been wrong before…

Calvin and Hobbes?
great topic! There MUST be other forms of life out there given the sheer number of planets.
The bummer is we’ll probably never know. Would be absolutely mind-blowing to see “other” life. I’m sure there are planets out there that have just fish as life. Why not?
I would also agree with an earlier poster who said there have probably been life-forms way more advnced than us even millions or billions of years ago.
Would be AMAZING to see them.
Did you know our radio waves emit into space?
Did you know that among the first radio signals to be picked up by extraterrestrial life would be coverage of Hitler and his regime? Yeah, aliens will jump at the chance to visit us.
Some people think that If we could meet aliens with superior intelligence they would enlight us. I say that If they were that smart they wouldnt have anything to do with us. They might even destroy us, knowing that the thing we do best is making a mess out of everything

I know a few things:
- Not many here, if any at all, are qualified to discuss thereotical physics intelligently. Lots of pop culture physics in this thread;
- I think given the enormity of the universe, “life” certainly exists elswhere;
- I don’t think a UFO “craft” has ever visited earth - we have likely witnessed experimental aircraft within our own technology;
- Someone mentioned gravity drives - a perfect example of “pop physics” because we do not yet even understand “gravity” and the “gravitron” is a theoretical particle;
- You will exhaust yourself attempting to define “life” or “intelligence” and it’s all just theoretical and pseudo-intellectual masturbation - there is barely “intelligent” life on this fucked up planet;
- You will exhaust yourself discussing theoretical physics as a means by which some life form could visit our planet - another exercise in “self-abuse”. If life exists in abundance given the sheer enormity of the universe, I’m sure there is nothing remarkable about Earth or our present civilization to warrant a visit at this time; and
- For giggles, I’ll add the following; there is much talk about an alien race being so advanced so as to conquer the “law of physics” as we know it. I say, given the time required to acquire that knowledge (assuming the theoretical aspects of it are possible), the odds are against a planet surviving that long given the violent nature of the universe and galaxy over time.

Those concepts are a little over my head. BUT from what I can tell, they said. The newtonian model is that gravity is “instant” but besed on the relative math, since electromagnetic forces behave a certain way, they can just compare that to gravity and say thats also how gravity behaves? Then they state that no direct testing can be achieved at this point. So thiers is still just a theory, just as my origional link is. It looks as if the theories the relative model uses is elegant, complex and has some holes, whereas the newtonian model is simple and understandable with little or no holes. Either way, I’m not sold that gravity does not propogate nearly “instantly” or at least orders of magnitude faster than light speed. I’m also not sure I am willing to do years worth of learning advanced math and physics to understand thier point. It should be able to be explained more simply.

Seeing as I myself can’t claim the title of a physicist yet, I won’t even try to argue this further anyways. Besides, what you believe, makes it all a whole lot more fun^[1]
Oh Don’t get me wrong, I don’t believe it as a fact, I just merely don’t dismiss it. I don’t know enough of either theory or how to go about validating either one to say either way. All I know is that it would be cooler/better if such a drive could exist. So the optimist in me wants that reality to be our reality. But if it turns out to never be the case, there is much wonder in the world and universe to still make me happy to be alive.
I don’t think anyone would claim that it would not be cool as shit to have a mass contact situation with a race of “Extra Terrestials” who come in an effort to help us. Bringing us useful non harmful technology, like medical devices, energy devices, etc… Making it possible for the population of the earth to live with a certain quality would help to diffuse a lot of the situations which cause us to act irrationaly. Curing people of any and all illness within minutes or hours with no relapses and no risky procedures would also make life on this planet a lot easier for billions of people. Of course the ones who would benefit the least from these types of things would be the power elite. They would be knocked down quite a few pegs by the rest of the planet being brought up a few pegs. Also it would just be cool to KNOW, you know what I mean?

What a high quality post, You claim to know a few things and then #2 and #3 on your list are things you think. Way to know what you think, truly impressive. Then you go on and for #5 and #6 you claim to know what will exhaust people, and since you didn’t provide any disclaimers, I have to assume that “EVERYONE” will be exhausted by this. Awsome, I love when someone knows something about everyone. Then the final beuty, #7 you claim to know how much time it takes a species to gain the knowledge necessary to conquer the laws of physics. Which apparently by your measure is longer than the life expectancy of a planet?

Quite obviously, you are not exhausted by meaningless dreaming. Meaningless, because you absolutely are not capable of discussion theoretical physics or any of the other issues for that matter. So yes, although I don’t know what exhausts you - I’ve never dropped acid and sat around staring at a wall going, “dude” over and over while giggling. The point is, these things are unknowable with the present understanding of our very best minds - of which obviously does not include you. And the physics concepts you are discussing are so far over your head they are rendered meaningless in this discussion. For crying out loud, you’re waxing poetic about “gravity drives” and it is apparent you don’t even understand that the gravitron itself is just a theory, which renders much of the discussion a fairy tale. If another alien race solved all these theoretical problems, why aren’t they vacationing right now on one of our wonderful beaches before global warming screws everything up? There is just as good chance that those laws you speak of are immutable and given that those galaxies are moving AWAY from us at great speed, contact will NEVER be made.

Right, Fucking Einstein here just keeps getting smarter with every post. I really like his “rules” about not talking about something unless you know every minute fucking detail. And if something is only a theory, well there is no proof so it’s fucking useless to talk about it. Man, I wish this guy was around to set guys like Newton, Einstein, Galelieo, Edison, Tesla, among others straight. You’re an angry little man aren’t ya? With a vegitarian name, I’d have thought you’d be rid of that red meat aggression lil guy.
I didn’t say they were rules. I basically said it’s a pretty whimsical discussion among a group that really doesn’t grasp theoretical physics who, by the way, are probably our most gifted intellectuals. Watching you flub around about gravity drives may appeal to some as a worthy discussion, but I just happen to see the folly in it. There is nothing worthless about qualified intellectuals having the discussion - your Einsteins and such, but the likes of Insurance Agent Extraordinaire Vegita talking about gravity drives is a bit like listening to two fifth graders argue over which Transformer can defeat the other, which I find utterly priceless. Or did I miss that advanced course on physics in the CPCU course?

No, not at all, which renders your reading comprehension absolutely fuckin brilliant. Given the lack of reading comprehension, please don’t be offended if I doubt your ability to reasonably discuss theroetical physics and such. About the only physics I can be sure you grasp is that if I squat before you, and you attempt squat right after me, with the same weight, you will precipitate violently to the ground. Or, if you attempt to deadlift after me, the bar will not move. Those physics I’m sure you’re aquainted with. I’m just not as confident in your ability to discuss theoretical physics, comsmology and such. Clear?
