I have heard and it makes sense to me that alcohol(heavy drinking, not a glass of red wine) will ruin any workout that you had previously in the day, and that it will also ruin the next days work out because of the so-called “downer” effects of alcohol. It slows your metabolism, dehydrates you, etc…
I choose not to drink even though I am in college because I want to make gains in my training and because I have a 16 month old son whom I am a role model for. That said, I still go out maybe once or twice a month and designated drive for my friends who don’t have the same values as me and I have never had a problem with not being able to socialize. Maybe a buddy will give you a hard time, but I think a lot of women find it cool that you have those values and you are motivated.
I think this because numerous women have told me so. Anyways as mentioned before just make up a good excuse. I tell people I am cutting weight for a cagefight.(not far from the truth)
but is it “better” to not lift at all if you are going to drink? i’ve heard that it’s more damaging to your body if you lift and drink in the same day as opposed to just drinking and skipping your lift

It’s almost as bad for you as masturbating on the same day.
Everything in moderation, a beer here and there WILL NOT KILL YOU, same as a glass of wine. You probably eat some foods which have a more negative effect than alcohol. Shit you can even get drunk once in a while doesnt mean you are going to lose 5 pounds of mass.
well the type of drinking im talking about doesn’t come in moderation…i’m a 2nd year college student in a fraternity, but i do train hard…i eat right 7 days a week, but drink like a fish on friday and saturday nights. does that change your opinion on whether drinking and lifting in the same day is less beneficial than just drinking.
I used to drink (and the rest) a hell of a lot. I think if you can motivate yourself to train on a friday morning or afternoon, before going out, then you are good to go.
Gotta release somehow… 'specially as an el Studento.
Eating righ is good, but remember there are about 180kcals per pint of Stella or 7kcals per gram of alcohol alone, so make sure thay are included in your diet.
I found once i quit all that shit, that my musculature increased alot. My motivation is there 24/7. My strength/muscle gains are always on an upward tilt. I look 5 years younger. I never ever miss a session. I have a lot more money to waste on other shit i dont need.
But many make fantastic progress with a moderate drinking schedule (I believe 2 days a week is moderate, and i wasnt moderate, so you see why i no longer drink…!)

As long as you aren’t drunk in the gym I still can’t see any special problem. I don’t think getting drunk after working out is going to be worse for you than just drinking.
Yeah jeez, he would come out of the gym, smile at the camera, then consume a fucking chicken and a fucking gallon of beer. Then he would be on his way…
I always wondered if i would see better gains if i quit drinking… i usually just got drunk on weekends…
so recently i ran into some legal problems and i was unable to drink for pretty much two months… i kept everything the same, training, nutrition, etc… and didnt notice any difference between gains while drinking and while not drinking… granted that wasnt a really long time… but still figured enough time that i wasnt drinking to notice something…
I dont think drinking is gonna hinder gains too much, i just like to keep it to the weekends which are nontraining days for me… of course… everyones body is different
this isnt just an opinion, it is also a fact. Its effects on blood vessels, nervous tissue, catabolic hormones, anabolic hormones, sleep, calories, adipose tissue… all affect muscle gain a little wouldn’t you say?
You are right, 2 months is no time at all… that is like training for 2 months only and saying - uh, resistance training has little to no effect on muscle mass.
Yeah two months isnt 2 years but it would be enough time to notice something… anything at all… increased energy, better recovery… something… i didnt notice anything… except i saved a little more money…
I know about a bunch of effects alcohol has on the body, but pertaining to the big picture is it going to that much of a disadvantage to your progress… in my opinion its not… but im still young, maybe drinking will catch up with me eventually and will hinder my progress… as of now i dont think it has
Firstly it does on a daily basis, hangovers, dehydration, elevated estrogen, decreased testosterone… now because you cant tell the negative effect, especially due to your age and energy levels, does not mean it isn’t there. It does not mean it won’t get worse with time, nor that over the next 10 years if you train that long (or do you intend to quit drinking?) that your overall gains will not be severely hampered in comparison to you if you consumed zero alcohol.
Secondly, while i believe you will have much better recovery and other benefits in 2 months, and just did not realise it, I have not drunk to get drunk for around 7, and being 28, i really notice it, for one - I train on weekends, which is something i never did when i went out drinking! For two, when i used to get wasted Fri and Sat, even just Sat… i never used to want to train till about Tues/Weds… Even if i forced a workout in on Monday, Tues, Thurs and Fri… I bet any money my recovery wasn’t near the level it is now.
Then i will refer you back to the paragraph where i mention “some” of the negative, scientifically proven, effects of short and long term alcohol consumption.
To conclude, as a social drinker who sees no problem in its effects on training, you will continue. It would be interesting to compare notes in 15 years time!
Lack of sleep and poor nutrition will have a worse effect than a few drinks. As long as you can drink without getting hungover and sick you should be fine. I know I have broken PR’s after a weekend of drinking(only drink in the evenings not the whole weekend). Everything in moderation
I’m about ready to give up drinking all together. I was a arrested last friday night 2 days before my birthday while trying to walk home from the bar. They copped me a PI and I spent the night in the hooscal, if I was you I’d let it go all together. It makes you hungry for shitty food, grows your gut, and stimulates estrogen production. Honestly it’s just not worth it anymore.
I can relate to you. I’m only in High School, but pressure to drink and smoke and whatnot is still very present. All I can say is props to you for making such a big change.
Somebody said that drinking hard liquor is worse than beers. Is that true? Is taking shots of Vodka worse than drinking beers? What has a bigger calorie/alcohol percentage ratio?
Has anybody worked out stoned? I never have for fear of wasting a workout taking 5 minute rest breaks listening to music and slacking in my lifts. How is it? Working out on X… it’s either gonna hurt like shit or feel amazing…
