Advice on TV: Plasma or LCD

Ive done a hand full of searches on google and yahoo about the differance between lcd and plasma. From what I gather though, plasma still sounds like the better choice. IMHO

I thought I read somewhere that plasma is something like 480hz vs lcd which is 60hz - 120 hz? is this true? if it is, why wouldnt you just pay the extra $$$ and get the plasma?

im looking at the best buy ad for this week. and they r offering a 50" samsung 1080p plasma for $1150!!! Now I was kicking myself in the butt for not pciking up one of the great deal of thanksgiving. Am wondering if this is something i should jump on?

Plasma has slightly higher picture quality, and less chance of motion blur during fast movement. LCD is less affected by ambient light, and has less screen glare.

LCD’s do seem to last a little longer than plasma from what I have read.
Basically, if you have a lot of light when you watch during the day, go LCD. If you can easily darken the room, plasma may give you a little better performance.

Personally, I like Samsung and Sony LCD’s. They seem to have the better picture quality of the LCD’s I have seen. I have one of each brand. I’ve had the Sony for about 3 years, and the Samsung for almost 2. Both are still great.

I read that LCD’s last around 10,000-20,000 more hours than Plasmas.

Ill still be buying a Plasma simply because they produce a better picture.

What are you using your TV for? This is key.

If you are using it for movies basically, go plasma as the blacks are darker and truer.

If you want to hook up your computer to it via dvi or dvi to hdmi, then you want LCD.

I have an LN40A650 and I have to say that for an lcd, the colors are incredible and dynamic 50,000:1 contrast rocks. Its basically the best lcd out, at least until OLED becomes affordable.

The Hz specs you’re talking about aren’t relevent. Not content is recorded in 480hz or 120hz for that matter. The 120hz trick doubles the frames to make the signal look smother. It makes me feel drunk and I don’t use it at all. Most tv, movies, games are what, 30hz or 60hz?

What size tv do you want and how much are you willing to spend?

Don’t just buy a TV b/c its cheap. You’ll regret it in the long run if you have the cash to get a better one.

Personally I prefer my electronics to have a shorter life so that I get to replace it more often and if that also comes with a better picture then it has to be plasma. I have 2 (both plasma), one is 3 years old and the other I just bought.

Synthetickiller, why would LCD be better for going from dvi? I currently do that with plasma and have had no issues.

Theoretically, LCDs can have a higher refresh rate and with the high FPS gaming that some do, this panel type would be better suited - again, on paper - for PC gaming.

LCDs also have a color shift effect that plasmas do not seem to have. Try standing directly in front of an LCD then slowly going to the left or rate - not parallel to the screen but like you are tracing a half circle - and watch the colors wash out. Better panels minimize this, but again, the fact that mfrs have to minimize it AT ALL means it DOES exist (bitches!).

However, I think it is splitting pubic hairs.

I also had more to say but the software engineer’s picture just degaussed my consciousness. I will come back when I have normalized.

I think this is by far the most important thing. If you will be watching in a dark room and light will never be an issue, the plasma is the better choice, as it does have a better picture quality. If you are putting it in a room with any ambient light at all, the reflection is likely to drive you crazy and you should go with the lcd.

I also agree with the Sony and Samsung comment. I lean towards the samsungs though. Also, if you get an lcd, I’d pony up the extra cash for a 120 hz model.
