Advice On a Separated Shoulder

Wait a second, I went back and reread your original post, and I need to clear something up. When you “seperated” your shoulder in the football game, do you mean your arm came out of socket? If thats the case, its a completely different injury than what we have been talking about as a “shoulder dislocation”.

MODOK, I think we are on the right track here. By separated shoulder, we are talking about a grade 1 or 2 acromio-clavicular joint sprain, and not a dislocation.

The OP hasn’t mentioned anything about it popping out of joint. But I agree that if it is a dislocation, that would be a whole different topic.

A question about the ART ? how long will this take ? my only concern is that i try ART for a couple of months and it doesnt work then its to late for surgery before the football season starts. [/quote]

Your ART provider would be able to answer a) whether he can help and b) how long.

I had an injury that was bad enough that it took 9 sessions to fix. But that’s pretty extreme.

It should not take more than a couple of months.

It’s diagnosed as an A-C joint separation. Do some Googling. THere are lots of nifty charts out there and other medical defintions.

CalLaw,
I agree, that’s what I was saying, but looking back at MODOK’s post, I think he may be questioning whether the OP actually knows what the diagnosis was.

I know many people confuse the terms separated and dislocated, when they are entirely different injuries.

noo my shoulder didnt come out of socket… it was a seperated shoulder at the AC joint.

thanks for all the advice i need to find an art guy in west michigan any one know of any ?

yeah my doctor said it was a grade 1 or 2 seperation but hes not sure which one , that isnt what im gettign surgery on ( well i mean im not having tendons put back together or anything like that ) the surgery is to go in there and clean it out of inflamation and bone spurs caused from the seperation.

I do not know of anyone personally, but you can find a provider here: Find a Provider - Active Release Techniques

Dammit! Every time I see a thread like this, it makes me think I didn’t need Tommy John Surgery for my elbow. I had a dislocated elbow and a ruptured ucl.

Now I’m 2 months out from lifting and I’ve lost 3 inches on my right arm. Paranoia!

yeap sometimes its like what if i wouldnt have gotten injured…

i finally hit my best parelel sqaut 405 dead 500 clean 225 and my bench is 260 , 10 pounds less then what is was last year because of injuries to my shoulder…
but its going to be like starting all over again… ill prlly go mentally insane with out lifting for three months lol
thanks for all of the advice , i would like to look into the a r t but because of time i think i am just going to go ahead with the surgery scheduled on the 20th of this month

thanks for all the advice

yesterday i went in for my surgery early in the morning. The surgery went well the doctor seen a spot where the collarbone and my shoulder joint were rubbing together. He shaved down part of the collarbone. It hurts really bad now , but hopefully this decision will benifit my future.

I will have about a month and a half to train b4 football starts. I will be working my ass off .

Let us know how the rehab goes.

Has there been any studies that show that ART actually hastens recovery? What is the mechanism by which ART helps recovery? How do you know ART helped heal your shoulder faster, than if you rested it.

MODOK’s advice is sound. Shoulder injuries are not all the same.
