Adding Weight to a Tire

So I got a free tire, great size but its only 410lbs. It feels heavy but its not where I’d like it to be, I flipped it 7 times on a 6th set or so. Any idea on how to add some weight to the tire?

I was thinking about getting some car tires, cutting them then basically screwing them to the inside of the big one to add some weight, I’m looking to get it to 500lbs but honestly I think I’ll outgrow that pretty quickly as well.

Also, I found a commercial airliner tire that I can get for free, however it still has the rim in it. And its probably upwards of 1,500lbs with that rim. Any clue on how to pull the rim out without some serious equipment?

The only thing I can think of for the airliner tire is an acetyline torch…

well nvm, got another tire today thats between 630-700, and can get tires that are probably up to 1,000 for free. I’ve found the jackpot of tires.

lol I’m in jacksonville, where in florida are you?

Easy, take small car tires and stuff them inside of a large tire. You can generally fit 7-10 car tires inside of a large tire giving you a 100+ lbs boost. This also makes the tire more challenging because the weight is balanced better.

I have also seen guys put chain inside of a tire and that works quite well.

here how our gym added weight to a 330kg tyre !

That’s a cool idea.

Do the bolts get in the way at all from the outside? Do they rub the forearms or anything like that?

that is a good idea, I’d thought about drilling hundreds of bolts in the tire and putting some washers on them to add some weight. However your way is a little easier lol.

some training partners and I are actually on this adventure ourselves, our goal is to make the 500 pound tire we have adjustable. Fortunately one of my partners is quite good with a blowtorch and works at a metal shop, we are simply constructing a frame that is within the tire that we can put regular barbells on. Besides having a friend that is good with metal cutting the chain and smaller car tire ideas all sound novel.

Just give them a call ahead to see if you can come grab one, bring your own truck but they’ll load it with a forklift for you. Was free for me and my buddy and should be for you.

just counter sink them in and then there would be no problem

Dang there is a GCR in florida, didn’t realize it was that big… my friend works in the Austin branch

If anyone is near Hood River, OR and wants a 450 to 500 pound tire, send me a PM. There’s one in the woods near my place that I’ve been annoyed by for a while.

I stuffed kettlebells and medicine balls inside my 650lbs tire. Have added as much as 150 lbs.

nah there is only 4 bolts in a cross pattern, pretty easy to not put your arms where the screw head are, the heads on the bolts are rounded anyway

My athletes will occasionally do band resisted Tire Flips… Each athlete will have a jumpstretch band around their hips, while their partner resists them from the back.

By using the Band, the athlete’s are forced to power through their hips more in order to successfully flip the tire. I have found that combining the horizontal force while performing a vertical lift helps activate their trunk more efficiently. Give it a shot!

if you go to any tractor store or tire store, they’ll give you tires for free… you just have to look… it costs them money to get rid of big tires like that… i got a 600 and an 800 lb tire for free from my local tire place… just ask around

Does anyone know what a sensible size of tyre for me would be to train with? I’m 5’10" and about 200lbs. For a rough idea of strength I can bench 265lbs, Squat 310lbs and deadlift over 400lbs.

I’d like it to be heavy enough that its challenging and I’m out of breath but can still do a good few reps on the trot, as I’d be using it for cardio as well. Would be grateful for any input.

start off with about 500-600lbs, get your form down and you’ll probably be able to bump it up in a few months
