Adapting Westside For BJJ

For some reason this small tid-bit doesn’t come up often or at all: You can go to class and just drill, you don’t have to roll.

When I’m in season for BJJ I’m on the mat 4-6 days a week, some sort of conditioning 2-4 days, and lifting 2-3 days a week. This sounds like a lot but I plan everything I do for a workable balance. If my weight volume is high maybe I will only roll 2-3 times that week and all of my conditioning is either short duration or walking. Maybe I’ll roll every time I’m on the mat but will have 10 minute breaks and only roll with 2-3 people. To preserve my grip I’ll use straps for everything for 2 straight weeks. These are all ways to responsibly program in BJJ, conditioning, and strength training. One of my favorite(most responsible) things I do if I’m not rolling that day is after I’m done drilling I’ll do my stretching and mobility work before I head home.

Over the last year I’ve developed blocks of “off season”, “in season”, and “pre-competition” to make the best use of my time/training economy. I’m currently in my off-season where I don’t push rolling very hard and am aggressively building as much strength as I can. The off-season also helps with healing up nagging injuries and catching up with life outside of sport while still improving on technique.

Good luck to everything, BJJ is a great sport to be a part of.
