Just curious, how long do your workouts take?
Usually about 20 minutes from the time I walk out into the garage until the time I’ve stripped the bar back down. I often set a timer for 15 minutes that I start right before I pick up the bar for my first rep, and when the time runs out I’ll call it then or maybe do one more rep if I feel like it.
To save time, I leave the axle loaded with my 100’s (since I don’t use them for anything else anyway) so I can roll in and start with 225 on the bar without needing to load. My wife never uses the axle, so she doesn’t mind that I leave it loaded with the 100’s - when she wants to lift she can just roll the axle out of the way and do her squats or pulls with the regular barbell. It seems like such a small thing but it is nice to walk out into the garage & get started with 225 right away - with a little kid and increasingly busy career responsibilities even saving those two minutes of loading the first couple plates at the start of the workout helps.
On weeknights when I have a little more time - sometimes my wife has an evening rehearsal and I just wait to work out until after putting my son to to bed - that’s usually when you see me get out the regular barbell and go a bit heavier if I’m feeling good. Like I said for my wife, I just roll the loaded axle out of the way and get to work with the barbell.
I’ve also decided that for awhile I’m gonna do most of my daily dose deadlift workouts at 405 on the axle with a heavier barbell pull just once or twice a week. Combination of time and physical recovery - I’ve been feeling really good doing 405 for most of the workouts and one or two big pulls rather than trying to do 495 every day. I might just need a couple more months of daily deadlifts to regain some of the strength I had; but, if I feel like I’m regaining ground with a bunch of 405 reps and a once-weekly venture to 500+ I’ll ride that for awhile.

are you chronically short on time? Your workouts are very efficient!
Anna, I say this with all due respect, you’ll understand in about 15 years.
I’m a hustling early career clinical trial statistician with a wife, a son, and a house in the burbs that requires a 30-60 minute commute (one way) depending on traffic and time of day.
Here’s a day in the life
5:30AM wake up
Have coffee, do some reading, check twitter, play with my son once he gets up
6:30AM drive to work
7:00-3:30ish work
3:45ish drive home
4:45ish arrive at home
If my wife is also home by then, I’ll work out sometime between 5 and 6. If she’s out at the time, I’m on dad duty, so I can’t work out until after I put my son to bed (usually around 7PM). I may eat dinner beforehand if I’m really hungry, in which case I’ll give myself some time for my meal to digest before eating, so that may mean waiting until 8PM or so to work out.
Parenthood is absolutely awesome and our son is a blast, but I think a common refrain you’ll hear from many parents when you ask them “are you short on time” is that a whole lot of your “spare time” evaporates when you have a kid. If you want one silly marker of that, look at my post history from like 2015-2016 on this site versus the last year. These days I basically only post in my own log; I’ve barely been able to keep up on reading a few logs of people who I’ve “known” on here for years.
Oh I’m not criticizing your routine. I think it’s amazing- gives me hope when I’ll be slaving away at my PHD in a couple of years ![]()
I forgot you had kids too, sorry. IDK if I’ll ever be ready though. the people on this forum haven’t been making a very good case ![]()
Maybe, maybe not. Priorities change as you age. 19 year old me would have wanted no part in kids either.
You do have a very nice and efficient set up. What you need, where you need it, quick and simple.
It’s a traaaaap

If you don’t think you’ll be ready because you look into your future and realize you don’t want kids, then don’t worry about it.
If you look into your future, realize you want kids at some point, but not until you’re “ready”, I’ve got news for you: you never will be. There is no amount of prep, reading, planning, etc that can ever make you “ready” for a child.
But, I can also say this: becoming a father was literally the best thing that has ever happened to me. Yes, as @ActivitiesGuy said, your kid consumes most of your spare time, and I will have to do some major training restructuring in the new year, but when my 3-month old son wakes up in the morning, sees me, and gets the biggest smile on his face?
Man, I wouldn’t trade that moment for all the spare time in the world.
I want to be the aunt who spoils her nieces/nephews
Idk if I want to deal with the process of actually carrying and raising kids. In case you guys haven’t realized, I’m quite spoiled and selfish
And that’s totally cool! Not everyone needs to have kids, and don’t let anyone pressure you into believing you need to.
You’re also young, and still have many many years ahead of you should things change. For now, just enjoy being tortured by Sheiko.
The world needs more people who are okay with not having kids, to be honest. Too many people. And a 3 kid limit on those who do have them before you have to adopt afterwards. But now we’re getting into dodgy territory…
