Ace Squatter Too Much for Me!?

Hey all, I have been surfing EBay looking for a squat suit cheap. I found a metal ace pro, exactly my size. Is it too much for me? Ive used a single ply Metal suit in the past. I just dont want to buy it and come meet day bomb out becuase I was a dumbass and bought a suit I cant handle

Advice much appreciated. Especially from people who have used the suit.

Sooner or later, you will be able to handle it.

All those problems you’ve been having squatting raw are going to become much bigger problems if you get into an Ace suit.

This. If you’re going to get into a suit, get a new super centurion. You don’t need to be in multiply any time soon.

It’s hard to say without seeing you in action in the suit. However, my hunch is that it is not too much suit if you using the stock sizing. Elite/Metal- like all the gear dealers- tends to err on the side of caution on it’s sizing charts. A true gear whore usually needs to go a size or two smaller than the chart. I have used an Ace for a couple years. Mine is snug- but not crazy tight- I can get it up and seated over a pair of briefs in about 5 minutes. Consider the following. Here are my approximate required-to-hit-parallel weights in the suit:

Just the suit (no briefs), straps down- 400 (might be less- I couldn’t bring myself to put on suit bottoms to only squat three plates)

Straps up but loose- 550

With a pair of very tight Boss briefs, straps down- 650

W/briefs, loose straps- 720

W/briefs, kinda tight straps- 800+

Depending on how I set up, my gear can take a pretty wide range of weights. If you can squat 400+ with belt and wraps, this is probably not too much suit for you. The choice of briefs and strap adjustments make a huge difference.

What I will caution you about area few quirks that I’ve noticed on the suit. They are not deal-breakers. But like all suits, the Ace has some peculiarities

-The straps are thick- real thick. As such weights dont settle into you back the same way they would in most other suits. If you have problem with the bar rolling on your back, this may aggravate it. if youtrain straps down all the time and think you are going to just flip them up on meet day, you and the spotters may be in
for an exciting attempt.

-The legs are long compared to any other suit I’ve tried. This can be good and bad. It provides more stopping power than short legs. However, I think it also pins your hamstrings a little. For me the suit is awful for sumo pulls because of the legs. My old style Metal suit or my old Centurion is better for pulls.

-Mine comes up very low on the chest. Where stock Leviathans and Bosses usually come up pretty high on the torso (on short dudes and girls they can come up to the neck almost), it seems like the Ace is cut a little lower. This is also good/bad. It gives you more room to get your air (especially for a larger lifter). However, you don’t get that stiff torso support that canvases and some of the stiffer polys are known for.

Hope that helps.

I agree with everything Pinto said. The straps are ridiculously thick and the bar does not feel securely planted on your back. I had to send mine to a seamstress to have the legs shortened. In fact, I don’t even squat with it, as it was giving me too many problems. I prefer a tight Ace briefs, snug Viking suit combo, but that’s just me. I just use it for sumo deadlifting now, but again, I had the legs shortened. I think you get the majority of carryover out of briefs.

I have a pretty sick-tight Ace and I don’t really like it that much. The legs are just too fucking long and it is such a bitch to get into. The straps never really bothered me, but I know some guys they fuck with.

I really like the Ace briefs though, my favorite combo so far is tight Ace briefs under a Metal Pro. I need a new suit though because mine is old and has been passed around the gym like a $2 whore.

work on your core, eventually you will figure out the suit.

To buckeye and rrcj: my gear squat is much better than my raw squat. Im serious, it looks alot better. My knees dont cave at all

EDIT: I have placed a bid on the suit. Im getting it, and If i dont like it I will just resell it.

I am not going to wear breifs under it for a while.

I have an ACE Squatter. Love it. It’s pretty tight so it takes me about 10 min or so to get into it and get it seated properly. I also agree with everything Pinto says also. I think the key in this suit is to just keep sitting back. The straps are quite thick so that take a bit of getting used to. My suit has stretched very little from when it was new. I’d say I get about 200# over my Raw squat out of it and that’s with the straps loose.

while were talking straps. With this suit I have to let the straps loose. ie a hand thickness loose to hit anywhere near parallel and it takes about 450+ lbs for me. I tried them tight like my old Centurian and I could only get 1/2 way down with 545. You’ll have to play with the straps to get shit right. For me this is fun knowing I can go loose and hit “light” weights or go tight and move some “heavy” shit. Light and heavy are all relative terms…I think your gonna love the suit. Let us know how it goes when you get it

IMO, getting a super centurion would be nearly the same as most double ply suits, not necessarily the ACE though. The advances in gear have made singple ply nearly the same in support. again, IMO. I know im late on this but if you find a good price, buy it. play with it. see what happens. If you cant get comfortable and find depth, put it on the shelf for a while. practice like you play. want to lift multi, practice multi.

How big is too big for those suits? I was gona get a 48 (snug size) but I keep geting outbid on, and theres a 54 for sale. I want to gain some weight also before I wear it and maybe put breifs under it. is a 54 too big? I weight 220

54 would be huge. 48 is probably going to be too small. Look for a 50.

Juan usually leaves his in the gym. If I steal that and sell it to Brauny, I’ll have the money to buy myself a 50.

He’d never know.
