Best guitarist: Vai,Rhoads,Hendrix
Clapton is to guitar playing as Carlin is to comedy…OVER RATED

I don’t have any opinions about drummers but I’ve been told that the drummer from RUSH is the best.

Nice call on Stewart Copeland Bohdi…

Bohdi: Great list brother, the only one on it I’m not too paricular on is BB. The man cannot sing and play at the same time. If you ever watch him he stops singing while he plays and then stops playing when he sings. It’s something he even admits to. Still, I guess that does’nt discount the fact he is a great guitarist… it’s just something I can’t help focusing on when I hear him.

Magnus, it’s actually hard for most lead guitarists to sing and play at the same time. Some phenoms like Hendrix and George Benson can amazingly do both with ease. The rest, Clapton for example, overlap as much as they can at the beginning and end of guitar-intensive sections.

I’m adding Lowell George to the list.

Kenny Wayne Sheppard plays a song on the new Kid Rock album.Actually a pretty good CD if you don’t count the “feel like makin love” cover.

Brad: Stewart is an amazing off beat drummer. In my oppinion almost all the drummers in a 3 man band are.

As for more of the Best Guitarist: Randy Rhodes…Steve Vai…Peter Frampton…Brian May…Tom Morrello… and no one at least I think hasn’t even mentioned…Yngwie Malstrom.

As my take on Best Bass players …No order at all :…Rocco Pestia…Stanley Clark…Abe Laboriel Sr…Bootsy Collins…Stu Hamm…Jimmy Haslip…Jaco Pastorius…Walter Becker…John Patitucci…Rocco Prestia…an John Paul Jones…

Magnus: My brother ,Yes I agree but not many lead singers can sing and throw down at the same time. Now that is talent for those that can. BUT not many can.

I can’t believe that nobody included:

Brian May
Leona Boyd (sp)

On their list of great guitar players.

STU

As a drummer and a guitarist, I always had the most trouble singing while pounding out a beat.

Therefore, guys that can, like (help me out with his name, guys) the drummer from Grand Funk who sang “We’re an American Band” and Don Henley from the Eagles singing “Hotel California”.

Hard stuff to do…

I love Joe Satriani. Guy is a musical genius.

I admired the guy so much I got his model guitar back then, the Ibanez JS1000. Beautiful sound.

Steve Vai is another favorite of mine.

The first instrumental record I ever bought was Surfing With The Alien. I still remember hearing “Satch Boogie” on the Headbanger’s Ball and getting chills.

I haven’t kept up with him the last few years but he had some cool stuff off of Flying in a Blue Dream and The Extremist.

My favorite Vai pieces are “Juice,” which is actually reminiscent of Satch Boogie, “Bad Horsie” and “The Audience is Listening.”

Doesn’t anyone dig jazz music? (except Bohdi, your contributions were duly noted)

But best drummer isn’t even a contest. Hands down, that honor goes to Tony fuckin’ Williams. On almost any session that he plays on, it’s hard for me to focus on anything going on besides the rhythms that he lays down.

Best guitar player, however, is a little tougher, and that one is open to debate. Stanley Jordan was a good call. I think Pat Martino’s up there as well.

I heard many people (not just here)mention Flea and Les Claypool as being the bests basists. I completely agree that these two are amazing. However, I think that being in the RHCP is really limiting what Flea is cabable of. The same goes for Les. I’ve tried to listen to Primus, but most of the songs are … you get the idea.

No one listed Mike Mann the best - what’s up with that?

I’m happy as long as i don’t see dave matthews or jon mayers names up here

Overlooked and underrated,Rick Nielson of Cheap Trick.

Johnny Law…dont forget that Joe Satriani gave lessons to Steve Vai…AND Kurt Hammit(sp?)…the guy from Metallica…

Hard to believe no one besides me is mentioning Ronnie Montrose. Listen to his Mutatis Mutandis album.

And Alex Lifeson…try playing some of his songs from RUSH…unbelievable tonality and chords… He swings an awesome ax!
Geddy Lee for bass is a solid bet also…

Tom Morello is a good call as well, but is he going to be limited to what he can do musically since he’s with Chris Cornell in Audioslave and the featured instrument (at least in their last album) was obviously Cornells voice?

I think he is the only person out there who can makes the noises he makes. He’s a powerful guitarist who isn’t just using his talent, he’s also using his soul.

B.

I have a huuuuge respect for Tom Morello, he pretty much performs sonic magic tricks with just a guitar, his amp and some pedals. Good to see him not fall off the face of the earth after RATM broke up

I think Alex Lifeson is a good rhythm guitarist.

Yes, Satch gave lessons to Vai and Hemmet, as well as Primus’ Larry LaLonde and Charlie Hunter.

Good call on Tom Morello for a contemporary guitarist, as most of the guitarists mentioned have been around for a long time
